Article Image It is believed that rhinoplasty was first developed by Sushruta, an ancient Indian physician, during 500 B.C.E. The procedure was first described in his book, Susrutha Samhita and Sushruta mainly used rhinoplasty to fix amputated noses. Nose amputation was a common practice of punishment for those who had committed a crime. It wasn't until the late 1800s that people began to get nose jobs for cosmetic reasons.

Today, more and more teens are undergoing plastic surgery and rhinoplasty is one of the more popular procedures. In 2000, more than 15,000 teens (ages 18 and younger) had nose jobs. It's not cheap either--depending on the surgeon and the extent of the surgery, a nose job can cost around $4,000. In addition, unless it is to improve a health condition, most insurance companies will not cover the expenses of rhinoplasty.
