Article Image While there's no cure for bipolar disorder, there is treatment available. According to research, the most effective treatment is a combination of methods. These methods include:
  • Psychotherapy, when a patient meets with a therapist to discuss problems.
  • Psycho-education, where the patient takes a pro-active role in his or her own recovery. He or she learns about the disease and tries to understand what they need to do in order to take care of themselves.
  • Medication to control episodes. Some of the more common medications used in treating bipolar disorder are: lithium, valproate, lamotrigine, gabapentin and topiramate. All medication should be carefully monitored by a physician.
  • Support from family and friends.
