Contrary to what some anti-pornography groups would have you believe, pornography isn't new. The word "pornography" comes from ancient Greece and originally referred to the short messages prostitutes would write on walls advertising their services. However, sexually explicit materials have existed long before that in every major civilization. Unlike today, much of it was considered an acceptable form of expression and displayed publicly.

You may have heard of the Indian sex manual, The Kama Sutra, but did you know that it was written in the 4th century A.D? In fact, graphic sex scenes can be found on ancient Chinese scrolls, African carvings and South American statues. As far as we know, the oldest known "pornography" is a 7,200-year-old Stone Age pair of anatomically correct male and female statues that appear to fit together. An archeologist who has studied the statues believes, "there is strong evidence that this is a copulation scene."
