Article Image The condom's effectiveness is highly dependant upon how well and when it is put on. Male condoms should always be put on as soon as a penis becomes erect, whether there is going to be oral, vaginal or anal sex. Additionally, if condoms do not have a tip reservoir at the end, it's important to leave extra space at the top of the condom for ejaculate.

Effectiveness, continued...Female condoms can be put in up to 8 hours before intercourse, but should be removed immediately after. Male condoms should be removed immediately as well. Once intercourse is complete, one must remove the male condom from the penis (while holding the base firmly) immediately, to prevent leakage.
