Although anyone can be targeted, most human trafficking victims are runaways, refugees, abandoned children or otherwise vulnerable people. The United States government estimates the number of people trafficked per year at 600,000 to 800,000 people(!). The majority are women and children (80% women and girls, 50% minors).
Victims of human trafficking are usually tricked into working by promises of marriage, education or employment. According to UNICEF, thousands of women who have experienced domestic violence are more likely to be trafficking victims.
