A: "GLBTQ" is an abbreviation for "Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and/or Questioning." For some, the Q stands for "Queer."

Our society has three categories for sexual orientation. Heterosexuals are attracted to people of a different gender (man to woman). Homosexuals are attracted to people of the same gender (man to man and woman to woman). Some homosexual men prefer to be called "gay," while some homosexual women prefer to be called "lesbian." Bisexual people can feel attracted to both males and females.

Transgender people feel that their sexual body parts (penis, vulva, testicles) don't match their personality and feelings inside. So, a transgender guy, for example, has a penis but wants to act and be treated like a girl.

Some people are real clear about their sexual orientation. They know early on in their life that they're heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual or transgender.

Others, though, feel confused about their sexual orientation. To figure it out, they might talk to people with different orientations. They might experiment sexually with people of different genders. In time, their true feelings usually become clear and they discover that they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or heterosexual.

The term "queer" can apply to someone who is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. Some prefer to be called "queer." Others don't.
