Experts say, if you feel suicidal or unsafe, you need to tell someone. If you feel you are in immediate danger, call 911 or head towards your nearest emergency room. You can also call a friend or someone that you feel close to. If you do not feel that you are at immediate risk then you should speak with a health care professional or counselor. They can help you learn how to deal with your pain. Many professionals believe you can survive suicidal feelings if you do either of two things: (1) find a way to reduce your pain, or (2) find a way to increase your coping resources. Both are possible.
If you know someone who has made a suicide threat, professionals urge that you take the threat seriously. Most people who have committed suicide had mentioned it in the past. Suicidal behavior is often a cry for help, so being a support and comfort to the individual is essential. Experts say if a friend is suicidal, be willing to help them sooner rather than later. Do not try to convince them that their problems aren't a big deal but rather insist that they seek help immediately. Be willing to listen to your friend. Try not to argue or give advice. Often a depressed person is suffering with an overwhelming amount of guilt and stress--and you don't want to add to those feelings.
