fast facts mononucleosis
Left Image
Article Image Is there some kind of mono medicine? Unfortunately, there's no medicine designed to fight the mono virus--yet. Research is currently underway, but for now, doctors recommend fighting each symptom separately. That means taking something like Advil or Tylenol (not aspirin) to help reduce a fever and head or body aches. Also, gargling with salt water or using throat lozenges can help relieve some of the discomfort that comes with a sore throat. If your sore throat becomes a strep or tonsil infection, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics to fight those infections.

Will it ever go away? Technically...no. Mono usually isn't very serious, but the virus does stay in your body for life. Most people have been exposed to the Epstein-Barr virus by the time they're 35 years old and have already built up antibodies to it (kind of like chicken pox). Basically, that means your body is immune to the virus and you probably won't get it again.
