Article Image A hermaphrodite is an individual who has both male and female reproductive sex organs. However, usually one set is not fully developed. This occurs in about 1.7 percent of all human births.

The term "hermaphrodite" comes from the Greek myth about the child of Hermes and Aphrodite whose name was Hermaphroditus. According to legend, Salmacis (a forest nymph) waited for Hermaphroditus to enter her pool of water, where she jumped on him. She then begged the Gods never to be parted from him. As a result, Salmacis and Hermaphroditus were bound together, creating one body with both male and female organs.
