If you think that you may be in an abusive relationship, talk with a trusted adult or call one of the hotlines listed below. You can also go to the police or a lawyer to try and get criminal or civil restraining orders that prohibit your abuser from coming near you and/or people you live with (absolutely necessary if the abuser has threatened to kill you). You must carry the order on you all the time for it to be effective. Violating a restraining order is a crime punishable by imprisonment and/or a fine. However, enforcement can be tricky—especially if both parties go to the same school or work in the same place.
