Girls fight. There’s no way to avoid it, really. It comes down to human nature and that you’re not going to get along with everyone. But when you get into a tiff with your friends, how do you handle it?

Some women have been turning to friendship counseling and have ended up spending thousands of dollars. Two women spent three thousand dollars to mend their strained relationship. Three thousand dollars! That’s a bit excessive, right?

The idea of friendship counseling seems pretty solid to me, actually. There’s relationship counseling and family counseling. So, why not for friendships too? But I think there are a lot of steps to take with a friendship before getting to that point of counseling.

Over the years, I’ve lost friends for one reason or another. And to tell you the truth, I can’t name a single one of them that I’d go to a friend counselor with. Sometimes people grow apart, and that’s totally okay. And sometimes if there is a toxic person in your life, you might need to let them go.

I have a lot of girlfriends that are scared of confrontation, even now as adults. It’s actually a really big issue that I’m seeing among girls these days. We’re so afraid of someone being unhappy or mad at us that we don’t take the time to address small issues before they blow up. And then when it does blow up it takes forever to fix. I find myself caught in the middle of issues between friends, so I guess I’m a friendship counselor in a way. Maybe I should start charging.

Before you start looking up friendship counselors with your bestie, let’s talk about some ways that you can handle confrontation so you’re not out three thousand dollars.

1. Communication: This is probably the biggest factor in any relationship. We’re not mind readers! Sure, we may have some freaky telepathic moments with our best friends, but that’s not the norm. You need an open line of communication. If something upset you, speak up. If you’re mad that your friend flaked on you for the umpteenth time, tell her. You might think she should know you well enough to pick up on your cues, but she really might be unaware.

2. Honesty: Another huge relationship cornerstone. Anything you lie about is going to come back and bite you in the butt. Maybe you don’t want to meet your friend for lunch, but just be upfront. If you’re not okay with something your friend is doing, don’t lie about it. If you’re honest in your friendship, you’ll avoid a lot of issues.

3. Watch your tongue: Girls can be sassy. There are times when it’s right to be snarky, and you might feel warranted in snapping at one of your friends because she’s been on your nerves. But that’s not going to get you anywhere. Instead your friend might feel attacked, and she’ll get mad and it’ll be a big thing. Try to avoid snide comments as a general rule anyway.

4. Don’t be passive aggressive: This is the worst! Don’t post Facebook messages or tweet about “someone” who did “something” because that person will more than likely figure it out. Don’t send passive aggressive texts in an attempt to tell your friend that you’re upset. Just tell her.

5. Confront the person involved: If you’re in a situation with your friend whether you’re feeling neglected or taken advantage of or any kind of issue, confront that friend. Don’t go to your other girls and talk about the issue behind her back. You certainly wouldn’t want them to do that to you. Hash it out and figure out how to move forward instead of having to say, “I think we should go to friendship counseling.”

Really all of this comes down to talking to each other. If you’re at a counselor’s office, they’ll make you do that anyway so you might as well do that for free. Try to deal with the issues together. If your friendship has really become toxic, then take a friend-break for a while before googling therapists.

I remember thinking that as time went by, maybe my still feeling crummy was just me overreacting. However, a new study seems to show that those fights we have with our siblings can have lasting negative effects on us — even a year later.

The study was conducted by a research team at the University Missouri, and they followed 145 pairs of adolescent siblings. Depending on the type of fight these duos had, the researchers found connections to varying types of negative consequences twelve months later.

Fights between the sibling pairs related to “violations of personal space and property” showed a connection to both a decrease in the individuals’ self-esteem and higher levels of anxiety. And those fights regarding “issues of equality and fairness?” Well, the researchers found a connection with more depression. It seems that the “last word” really doesn’t seem to be the last of these fights.

I’ll say that for me, fights with my brothers have always stung the most — often more than those with my friends, my boyfriend, even my parents. I think because my siblings were the ones who could relate most to what it was like to grow up in my same environment, I wanted us to be a really awesome team. When we disagreed on something, it just felt really personal. Plus, a fight happening where you live and can’t really distance yourself from is an added layer of rough.

The researchers of the original study have a couple suggestions for parents about how to keep sibling bickering at bay, and while I certainly can’t claim to be an expert on sibling relationships, there are a couple things that over the years I’ve tried to do to keep the sibling peace at least in my household.

I try to direct family conversation toward topics that can include all us kids, rather than just focusing on one person’s achievements in school or sports (I totally used to tally up how often we’d talk about my brothers’ games at dinner…). I also try to never assume what my brothers’ plans are. Too many times I’ve figured they didn’t need to use our shared car, only to have a blowout later when it turns out we all made separate plans.

Believe me, we still fight. I mean, it happens. But knowing how long-lasting those fights can be, I think it’s important to make sure like with any relationship, you’re taking the time to really respect the other person. Especially with this information that your sibling spats can leave you still feeling not-so-great even a while after, maybe trying to keep the peace between you and the sibs would be a good resolution for the new year that could keep all of you feeling healthier and happier.

Most of my photos exist only online, so actually getting them printed up is something I wish I did more, but tends to get forgotten once things get busy (which feels like always!). Find a local photo center where you can print up copies of favorite photos from a trip or event you attended together, or even just you guys hanging out. Even if you don't have time to get a frame, just gifting those printed photos shows you made some extra effort to do something thoughtful and showcase those special memories.

Offer A Big-Time Favor

Okay, so I don't mean just hand over an IOU note like the one pictured. What I mean is give the gift of "I owe you a favor you really want done." Now, this shouldn't feel like a throwaway gift to this person, but rather it should be something that you'll really have to invest in — like undertaking a total reorganization of your BFF's closet, for example.

To save you the embarrassment of asking a super rude question, here are four questions that should never escape your lips. Just don’t ask them. Ever.

1. How Much Do You Weigh?
I’ve been asked this question so many freaking times and it’s insane that people think it’s an acceptable thing to ask. What does my weight have to do with anything? I’m on the smaller side and get it a lot–but I have friends who are on the bigger side, and they hear it, too. That number on the scale is a pretty touchy subject for a lot of people, and your asking about it just aggravates the situation. If you’re looking to buy me a sweater or something, just ask what size I’d be–but don’t ask about my actual weight. It makes you look like a clueless jerk.

2. How Much Did That Cost?
Oh. My. Goodness. If you like my new scarf or shirt or whatever, say so, but don’t ask how much I paid for it. I know you might be asking because you want to get it for yourself, but the thing is, how much I paid is really none of your business. You don’t know if the person you’re talking to gets her clothes as hand-me-downs from neighbors, on the clearance rack at Target, or at Bloomingdale’s for full price; and for many people, divulging those details is uncomfortable, because they can reveal a lot about their family’s budget–something that’s super personal! Unless someone tells you on her own how much she spent (I like to tell my friends when I get good deals so they can get in on them, too!), just give the compliment and then drop it. No need to be rude and open a can of worms over a woolly sweater, right?!

3. How Far Have You Guys Gone?
Girly gossip can be so fun, but when this question gets brought up, it makes my toes curl–not in the good way. It’s great to be excited for your girlfriends when they tell you that they met a new guy, or that they had a great date. But asking outright for juicy details about her make out sessions is in super poor taste. It makes you look like a rude gossip hound and might make her self-conscious about how far she has (or hasn’t!) gone with her guy. When it comes to your friends and their sex lives, always refer to these two rules: Don’t ask for information unless she offers, and don’t judge if and when she does!

4. How Much Do Your Parents Make?
I know first-hand how much this question sucks. My mom and dad didn’t make much money when I was growing up, and I was really self-conscious of that (even though I know now I shouldn’t have been) because all my friends were really well-off. So when one of my friends started blabbing about how much her dad made as a corporate lawyer, and then asked about my family, it felt like crap. Why? Well, how much someone earns through their work is super tied into how much people think they’re worth in general. People who make less often feel inferior to those who make more. Of course that’s wrong, because sometimes the people with the least vital jobs in our societies–hello, professional athletes!–make the most money; but it’s still how a lot of people feel. So asking questions about how much anyone gets paid, whether it’s parents or even your friends when they get after-school jobs, is plainly rude and inappropriate.

Seriously ladies, don’t ask any of those questions. Even if you don’t mean them in a nasty way, they will come across as rude and make you look like the bad guy.

Here’s why: If you receive Christmas cards (or Hanukkah cards, or New Year’s cards, whatever!), you shouldn’t be sitting around judging people based on the design they chose to send. That’s actually the antithesis of the point of holiday cards! If someone thought enough about you to sit down, write out a little card, and pop it in the mail? That’s an incredibly thoughtful thing in the age of Twitter, Facebook, and text messaging. Any card–whether it has Snoopy or Santa on the front–should make you feel loved and happy.

I take sending Christmas cards very seriously. I love it. Every year, I schedule an evening where I put on my favorite Elvis Christmas album (it’s cheesy, but awesome), make some hot chocolate, and go to town on those cards. Sure, I try to get cute ones that aren’t super religious (because I’m not)–but I’d like to think that when my friends and family members open them, they’re not wondering how much I spent or what statement I’m trying to make about myself. I’m not sending them to get attention–I’m sending them to spread affection. Totally different!

Christmas cards are like books in that you can’t read them by their covers. It’s what’s inside–the message you write yourself–that counts. I’m just hoping all of you remember that this year, too.

We love you. We really do. And we appreciate all the insane things you’ve done for us (no, that time I dropped my locket in the toilet and you fished it out for me has not been forgotten!)–but could you please stop nagging us about the most stupid things? When we were younger, you nagging us to do things like brushing our teeth or tying our shoe laces was actually helpful, because we didn’t know what the hell we were doing. But now that we’re a little more grown up, there are a few nagging points you can feel free to let go of. In fact, here are five things we’d love you to stop nagging us about right away:

1. Standing Up Straight
Mom? You want to know the truth? When you’re not around, we all stand up so straight it’s like we’ve gained 3 inches. We just slouch to piss you off. Never fails. Want us to walk taller? Stop nagging us about it!

2. Wearing Less/More/Different Makeup
Some of us wear makeup because we like the way it looks. Some of us like the way we look without makeup even better. Yes, sometimes we’ll make not-so-glamorous decisions and cringe while looking back on our own photos years later, but isn’t that our right? You wore some weird looks back in the day, too (we’ve seen pictures), so let it go.

3. Dating Nicer Boys
First off, mom, you don’t even know what the guys at school are like. If you could actually spend time with all of them and got to know them pretty well, I think you’d know we’re making the best decisions we really can because HOO BOY, there’s not a lot to choose from. Plus, um, it’s not like we’re old enough to get married or anything at this point. Can’t we date some weirdos before settling down?!

4. Missing Curfew (By 10 Minutes)
If the worst thing I do is come home 10 minutes late, I think you know I’m a pretty good daughter/person/citizen of the world. Don’t even get me started on this one, Moms. Usually the “nice” girl you compare us to is a total back-stabbing bitch who only seems super nice on the surface. You have no idea. Every time you tell us to be more like her, you’re actually telling us to lie, cheat, and generally be a selfish jerk. Stick to what you know, Moms, and appreciate the awesome daughters you have.
