Sometimes in the middle of the work or school day, your mind starts wandering. This becomes more of an issue when your job revolves around the Internet. That’s how I found myself spending about twenty minutes taking the Online Color Challenge from X-Rite.

The gist is pretty straightforward. There’s a row of colors and the two on the ends are set for each row. You move around the color squares in the middle into the proper order. This test is based on the Farnswell-Munsell 100 Hue Test, where you do a similar color ordering, but with actual little “color caps” in a kit that you physically put in order.

Well, the idea may be pretty simple, but that certainly didn’t mean I thought it was easy. When you hear the directions it’s like, “Oh yeah, sort colors? Totes can do that!” Then I started and was freaking out about where to put the little squares. I’d second guess myself. I’d look away from the computer screen, and my eyesight had started to go a little nutty. I will say though by the time I went to hit submit, I felt pretty good about my answers.

I’m sure you’re dying to know how I did! Well, I got an 18, and at first, I had no idea what that meant. After I put in my gender and age info, it showed me a little scale that went from 0 to 99. Apparently the best score I could get was zero (a wizard of color acuity!) and the 99 meant the lowest color acuity.

So I guess looking at it on the scale, my color acuity is close-ish to being good? I tried to do some research, but I had kind of a hard time finding out the average score for my age, so right now, I guess I’m a little at a stand still.

According to the test site, there’s apparently quite a big difference between color vision issues when it comes to men vs. women. For women, 1 out of every 255 have some sort of issue with seeing color, but for men, it’s 1 in every 12. I already have pretty blurry vision (full-time glasses wearer over here!), so should I be concerned about how I can discern color now too? Right now, I think I’m doing all right, but it was still pretty interesting to test it out.

Still, I thought this was a pretty cool challenge and it ended up being harder than I thought it would be! I know this online one is based on this other test that has been the subject of studies and used by health professionals, but I’m guessing there could be some variation between doing the actual test versus online.

So that said, if you are really concerned about how your eyes see color or just your eyesight in general, talking with a doctor is probably your most official bet. However, if you’re just looking for a little bit of of a distraction, you may want to see how you fare at the color challenge yourself!

New Steubenville rape pictures and details have emerged–and they’re so scary. | Source: Shutterstock

As if the Ohio football team rape case couldn’t get any more horrifying, there’s more: Steubenville rape pictures were taken at the time, and they’ve made their way online.

You may remember last week when the Anonymous hackers group posted a video of some sadistic guys bragging about the brutal gang rape of an unconscious 16-year-old girl. The whole thing is sick, twisted, and super disturbing. But the only silver lining here is that these idiots who were so proud of the atrocity that they committed were also stupid enough to document it–and it’s what wound up getting some of them caught. (Like the Justin Bieber pot pics, only, you know, super harmful.)

Now, cell phone photos indicate that there may be two more victims of the Steubenville rape epidemic.

A football teammate of Ma’lik Richmond and Trent Mays–the guys being charged with the rape of the first victim–had photos of two other girls on his phone in various states of consciousness and undress. They’re lying face down on the same carpet that the photos of the first victim showed. Uh, what is wrong with these people?

The only reason the pigs that recorded this aren’t being charged with it is because some of them were smart enough to erase the photos before cops confiscated their phones for the investigation.

More details about the rape that got everyone talking are emerging, too, and they’re horrifying. Seriously, read on at your own risk:

Apparently, following a football win, the guys were eating at a friend’s house together when they started texting people to come party. The rape victim was one of them, and she was supposedly friends with some of the guys–a few of whom were said to have dated her, so you’d think they’d have more consideration or respect for her, her safety, her well-being, her humanity. Nope.

There were multiple parties that night, and in testimony, people said they saw her drinking from a cup at the first party–and that’s it. When she got to the second party, she wasn’t coherent and needed help walking. Who helped her? Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond, who were the same guys who allegedly raped her. Chances are she was so out of it that their help standing made her feel safe enough around them to let her guard down–that’s if she was even coherent enough to make that kind of a decision.

The victim threw up in the street, then left that party with Trent Mays and Ma’lik Richmond–who assaulted her in the car ride on the way to the next party. By this time, a witness who recorded the incident–and then deleted it–said she was talking, but no one could understand what she was saying. At the third party, she was completely silent. At one point, two of the guys held her by the wrists and ankles and led her into the basement. Once in the basement, she threw up again, then sat on the floor and fell to her side.

Shortly after that, a witness came into the basement and said she was on her stomach naked on the floor.

Ma’lik raped her while Trent tried shaking her shoulders to wake her up, and she was totally unresponsive.

Someone sent a photo of the girl to her mom’s phone–and then her parents took her to the hospital and to the police. Okay, can you just imagine for a second what that had to have been like? For her? For her mom?

No one’s sure what was in the cup at the first party, and too much time passed between the assault and when she reported it to run a toxicology test to see if she’d been drugged–though it sure sounds like she was, because it’s very, very hard to get blackout drunk and sick from one beverage unless it’s laced with someone a lot more sinister. What’s more, the victim showered–which got rid of physical and DNA evidence.

This is not the victim’s fault. She didn’t even know what happened to her. She had no recollection of anything after the first party. Chances are, she’s learning the details as quickly as the police and courts are. And even if she did remember and chose to shower and not report it? That doesn’t mean the rape is her fault. Ever.

The only people at fault for the Steubenville rape are the Steubenville rapists–and the disgusting excuses for human beings who recorded the incident instead of intervening and helping the victim. The very least they could have done was retain the evidence, accept responsibility and help bring these other monsters to justice. Our thoughts are with the victims, and may these atrocities be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They’ve earned it.

I never thought I would be taking sex advice from Taylor Swift, but I learned something really important from her today. Obviously Taylor has dated a lot of guys. Four albums worth to be exact. Homegirl falls in and out of love faster than I eat an entire pack or Oreos, which is like really fast.

Since her very public breakup with her very public boyfriend, Harry Styles, everyone’s been trying to figure out why it ended. Well, one insider is saying Harry ended it because Taylor’s a prude. To sum it up, Harry apparently finds the popstar “sexually uninteresting.”

My favorite part: “What she doesn’t get is that the guys keep dumping her because she’s being a prude.”

I have to sound off here. I’m not Taylor’s biggest fan in the world, but after reading this article I’m pretty ticked.

A person’s sex life is nobody’s business, celebrity or not. Taylor can have sex or not have sex with all of her boyfriends, and it shouldn’t matter. We get upset about slut-shaming all the time, but we should be getting upset about prude-shaming too, which is exactly what’s happening here.

It seems us girls can’t win either way. If we have sex with a number of people, we’re sluts. If we don’t have sex with anyone, we’re prudes. Where does it end?

If you are comfortable with the choices you’re making in your sex life, that’s all that matters. You are your own judge here, not anyone else. If you want to have sex, great (be safe!). If you don’t want to have sex, great. It’s up to you, and you should never let someone–your boyfriend, your friends or even Harry Styles–dictate how to handle your life.

If you’re with a guy and you feel pressured, speak up. You’re allowed to say no to anything you don’t want to do. It doesn’t make you a prude to say no.

Does “Fashion Police” make Kelly Osbourne bully stars? Lady Gaga thinks so–but Sharon Osbourne has other ideas. | Source: WENN

Does Kelly Osbourne bully people and get paid for it? That’s the argument that Lady Gaga made when Kelly accused Gaga of not controlling her fans, who reportedly harassed her on Twitter. It turned into a battle of magazine quotes, open letters and even Sharon Osbourne got involved. C’mon, girls, cut this crap out.

Here’s how it started. Kelly Osbourne said in an interview that Lady Gaga’s fans, affectionately dubbed Little Monsters, bully her online, usually about her weight–something she’s struggled with for a while. (For the record, I think she looks great, and I love her purple hair to pieces.) Here’s what she had to say: “I’m the thinnest I’ve ever been and the healthiest I’ve ever been,” she said. “I get called fat all the time. A big fat whore.” So she’s being called fat and slut shamed at the same time? Awesome. She added, “Lady Gaga’s fans are the worst. They’ve said I should kill myself, that they hope I get raped. I mean it’s crazy, but I’ve had this all my life and I just try and ignore it.”

First of all, no one should have to deal with that. Ever. Anyone who wishes rape or suicide on anyone has real issues and should probably hop onto Lady Gaga’s Born Brave Bus to get themselves some help.

Lady Gaga fired back at Kelly Osbourne’s bullying allegations, and she made a pretty valid point: People watch Kelly Osbourne bully other people every week on Fashion Police. Here’s her letter:

Dear Kelly,

While I wish you had reached out to me personally, as the head of the Born This Way foundation with my mother Cynthia we would like to respond. Everyday, through my music and public voice I choose to be positive and work towards a kinder and braver world with our community of followers. I encourage them to ignore criticism, stand up to bullies, know their own value and see that we are all the same and no one person is worth more than another. I know I’m perceived as a wild child, but in reality I am woman that deeply cares for humanity. I have empathy for you Kelly, but I feel it culturally important to note that you have chosen a less compassionate path. Your work on E! with the Fashion Police is rooted in criticism, judgment, and rating people’s beauty against one another. “Appearance” is the most used reason for bullying in the world. Your show breeds negativity, and over the years has even become comedic in nature. It glorifies you and Joan Rivers pointing in the camera, laughing, and making jokes about artists and celebrities as if we are zoo animals. What about your body revolution? It used to make me truly sad when I would hear people talk about your weight when you were younger, as I was bullied too. To see you blossoming into a beautiful slender woman who makes fun of others for a living is astounding. Why not help others? Why not defend others who are bullied for their image and share your story? I am pointing this out not to take a crack at your character, as we’ve met before and you’re lovely. However, I urge you to take responsibility and accountability for the example that you are setting for young people. They look up to you because you are famous, and if you treat others that way on TV, many adolescents at home on twitter assume your actions are acceptable: well if she does it, why can’t I? I cannot control my fans, and I discourage them from any negativity and violence, because that is wrong and hurtful — and I do feel badly that your feelings were hurt. However, we can all do our part in the media to set a standard of respect, compassion, and love. I wish for you to be treated with the kindness and respect that everyone deserves. While some of my fans have learning to do, most of them share the same values as I, and it’s what bonds us together. And that bond is strong.

Basically, Lady Gaga politely called Kelly Osbourne out on her hypocrisy. It’s also worth it to note that in the press, we’ve seen Kelly Osbourne bully others, including Christina Aguilera, about their weight–and she even said Lady Gaga may have been pregnant when she was spotted looking a bit fuller than we’re used to seeing her. To be fair, that may not have been deliberately mean–it may have just been a guess–but why is she talking about anyone else’s weight when she knows how terrible it feels?

Of course, Kelly’s mom Sharon got in on the mix, releasing a letter of her own to criticize Lady Gaga for wearing fur and dresses made of raw meat. Sharon also says that the Kelly Osbourne bully we see on Fashion Police is representative of “the real world.” (You can read the full letter here.)

For the record, I think wearing fur is dumb because it’s usually not even pretty enough to justify skinning an animal for it, and I can’t even imagine the health risks associated with having raw meat all over you. But Sharon Osbourne is missing the point and talking in circles. While it’d be awesome if everyone respected all life equally, Lady Gaga’s point was about seeing Kelly Osbourne bully other people. How are we supposed to extend courtesy and love to animals if we can’t even tolerate each other?

Gaga never encouraged her fans to bully anyone ever. It’s something a few particularly disturbed Little Monsters did on their own free will, earning the “Little Monster” nickname for all the wrong reasons. She discourages this behavior, but she can’t be a babysitter.

The fact is, it’s horrible that Kelly Osbourne is bullied by anyone, be it Lady Gaga’s fans, Joan Rivers on a bad day, or strangers online. But the fact that she makes a living promoting similar behavior instead of rising above it and doing something to prevent it from happening to anyone else is sad. Most of the time Fashion Police isn’t even that entertaining, which is astounding when you consider that not only is Kelly on the panel, but so is one of the greatest female comedians ever. It just seems too easy, too thoughtless, and too cheap to pick on people for what they look like–especially when you’ve dealt with it yourself.

Is Lady Gaga looking for attention? Yes. She usually is. But she’s also bringing awareness to a bigger problem, and that’s commendable. It sounds like Kelly and Sharon are just a little upset that in this case, she’s right.

Dealing with smartphone contracts through your cell phone provider can already be a hassle. But what if you had to sign another iPhone contract – one that your parents wrote for you?

Well, that’s the story for one 13-year-old boy, who got a smartphone for Christmas along with an iPhone contract of 18 rules that were written by his mom. The story has generated some debate, and I want to know what you guys think.

I feel like if my parents handed me this particular contract when they gave me a phone, I would just be like “OKAY, YEAH, WHATEVER, I SIGN, LET ME PLAY ANGRY BIRDS NOW!” Then later when I actually read through the rules, I know that to a few of them, teen me would have said “WTF?” (in my head of course, as my mom would not be happy with that language).

According to a few of the rules, her son can’t bring it to school, shouldn’t have it out in public and he also should be cool with leaving it at home a lot of the time. For that last one, the mom tells her son not be worried about having FOMO (props to this mom for knowing what that is!) if he doesn’t have his phone. I think teenager Meg would be more worried about having FONGMAP or “fear of nobody getting me after practice,” and I’m actually pretty sure that is the only reason my parents even bought me a cell phone as a teen.

If my parents tried to lay out when and where I could use my iPhone, regardless of their good intentions, I think the first message I’d take away is “You don’t trust me to be responsible.” The mom who wrote the contract has said that she hasn’t gotten that response from her son, but she has from other people commenting on her rules.

Still, in the grand scheme of the contract, I do think this mom here offers talking points on some important topics that maybe aren’t at the front of every teen’s mind. Things like the consequences of taking naked pictures or not walking around with your eyes glued to your phone (which can be really dangerous).

As much as I could see my teen self being totally offended by my mom handing me this iPhone contract, I totally feel for this mom. If you’ve ever babysat, you know the kind of panic there is when you realize all of the things that could go wrong. I imagine for parents it is like that every single day and you just want to keep your kids safe and also well-rounded. Different things work for different families, and if this iPhone contract works well for them, then awesome.

Personally, I know I’m going to be a totally overprotective mom. It’s just my personality. I pledge now though to keep in mind that when future mom Meg is writing up a list of phone rules (or by that point, who knows what technology we will have), I will take a second to consider how teen Meg would have felt about the whole thing and proceed from there so everyone in my family is happy.

We love Jennifer Lawrence here at Gurl, so when the nominations for the Academy Awards were announced this morning, we were excited to learn that Jen is in the running this year for Best Actress in a Leading Role. However, we have to say that it’s another girl nominated in that same category that we’re the most psyched to talk about: Quvenzhané Wallis.

At only nine years old, that makes Quvenzhané the youngest Best Actress nominee EVER. She is up for her performance as Hushpuppy in the indie movie, Beasts of the Southern Wild. The film centers around Hushpuppy, who lives with her dad in a poor bayou community, and the plot is also infused with fantastical elements. Even though watching this movie has been on my to-do list for a while now, it’s now raced it’s way to the top because I want to be totally in the know about her history-making performance!

Quvenzhané was only five-years-old when she auditioned (try not to feel too guilty about your lack of big moves at that age) and this is her first movie. So what is Quvenzhané’s acting method? Please just fall in love with this exchange at a press event between Beasts director Benh Zeitlin and Quvenzhané that Entertainment Weekly recounted: Zeitlin asked what goes through her mind when she’s acting. The little girl considered this for a moment, then broke into a smile: “La la-la, la-la, la-la …!” she sang. “That’s all I think!” Oh my gosh, this girl is awesome.

I am simultaneously beyond excited for Quvenzhané, and also extremely jealous that she’ll be going to the Academy Awards this year. Would it be possible for me to get an honorary invitation from someone? Oscar nomination day always kicks off my movie mania, but that doesn’t mean I don’t have a couple of complaints to make with the nominee list this year. Like, where is Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director? Also, why no love at all for The Perks of Being A Wallflower?

The thing is, though, that in any given year there’s always going to be more awesome performances than there are nomination slots, and I like that the Oscars get people talking and debating. While only one person may get the statue, I think getting people talking about film and artistic performances in general is kind of a big win. Even though there are a couple of names I wish had been called, I’m certainly not going to let that take away from how excited I am about Quvenzhané’s nomination. Other ladies I’m excited for? I’m digging Anne Hathaway being nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Adele getting a nomination for her song “Skyfall.” Get it, girls!

The Academy Awards are still a little bit of a ways off (February 24!), but you can get your movie awards season off to a good start by tuning in to the Golden Globes on Sunday, which are going to be hosted by fabulous and funny ladies Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. I can only expect good things.

In “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1″ movie, a deleted scene shows a steamy sex talk between Bella and Edward (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson)! | Source: YouTube

The clip isn’t a sex scene, but rather a sex talk between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson as Bella and Edward are in the kitchen the morning after they basically break the bed. Turns out, having sex for the first time may have destroyed the headboard, but at least one piece of bedding survived their, well, bedding.

“Pillow survived,” a still-human Bella says. Robert Pattinson, in all his red-eyed, pale skinned glory as the brooding vamp grins, “Practice makes perfect, right?” Hey-yo!

It turns out, having sex wasn’t the most terrible thing in the world for Bella, and Kristen Stewart sort of nails her vulnerable, morning after state. “I did not know how good being human could be,” she says. R-Pattz smirks and chuckles, “So sex was the key after all!”

Then they pretty much start making out and priming themselves for round two. And it’s not just a sex talk–in the scene, Bella and Edward are actually talking about how Bella is balking at becoming a vampire because, well, sex feels good as a human.

Why was the sex talk edited out? Aside from being a bit too steamy for a lot of Twilight‘s younger fans, it turns out, the director said there was just a whole lot of action to pack into one movie.

“As Twilight series devotees know, there was a lot of ground to cover in adapting Breaking Dawn to the screen. Between the wedding, the honeymoon, the birth, and everything in between, naturally there were things that didn’t make it into our final cut,” Bill Condon said in a statement. “But I wanted to make sure that for all the Twihards out there, there was a chance to see some of these cut scenes–several of which are fan favorites from the book.”

The steamy sex talk scene will be in the Breaking Dawn: Part 1 Extended Edition DVD, which hits shelves March 2. Start counting down, Twihards! In the meantime, you can watch the scene here!

There are few things in the world that get me more inspired than the Olympics. Seeing people accomplish things that can seem impossible just gets me so hyped up to push my own limits. During these past Olympics, there was some serious girl power going on in London!

One of my favorite new Olympic faces this year was teen swimmer Missy Franklin. Not only was she crazy talented, but she just always seemed so excited to be at the Olympics (and I mean, can you blame her?!). Missy actually still swims for her high school swim team (see, totally relatable, right?) and Today reported this morning that she apparently confessed to feeling nervous before their first meet this season.

So, despite being literally one of the best in the world at her sports and having had millions of people across the world watch her this summer, she still got some butterflies before going out there and doing her thing. Honestly, I think it’s a really refreshing thing to hear from someone who has had such public accomplishments. We all just want to succeed at what makes us happy, whether that’s on prime time TV or in our high school gyms. No matter the environment, we just want to feel good about our performance.

Even if you’ve done something a hundred, a thousand, maybe even a million times, nerves are bound to happen. However, by letting nerves stand in your way, you may never know your awesome potential. Every time you put yourself out there is a totally new experience where you feel like anything can happen, but if you remind yourself that you have the talent and work ethic (just like Missy!) to succeed, I know you’ll all do great.

If you’re feeling nervous gearing up for your basketball game or piano recital, just remember that even those girls who might make it seem so easy to put themselves out there have felt nerves just like you. Whether it’s talking to someone about it or taking a few seconds to just close your eyes and take a deep breath, try to find a way that helps you deal with your nervous feelings if they pop up. Then, just go out there and show everyone how much you rock (we’re rooting for you!).

I’m obsessed with sweatpants, preferably the yoga pants from the Victoria’s Secret PINK line. What’s not to love? They’re comfy, they’re warm, they’re cozy and while they don’t scream “FASHION”, I honestly think they can be pretty cute. So I feel personally offended by this post on the New York Daily News that totally puts down Mila Kunis for being photographed in sweats. The dek for the post literally says this: “Once ‘Sexiest Woman Alive,’ ‘Black Swan’ star now dresses like an ugly duckling.” 

I mean, seriously? Is that really necessary? Okay, so she’s been photographed wearing a lot of sweatpants lately. Um, who cares? How does this affect us? I get that she’s a celebrity and her appearance is always going to be judged, however unfairly that may be, but this article is just way too mean and nasty to ignore. Not only is it absolutely ridiculous to call someone who looks and acts like Mila Kunis an “ugly duckling”, but it’s totally not cool to rip on sweatpants.

Before we get into why sweatpants are amazing, let’s just talk about why Mila Kunis can rock sweats as often as she likes. The Daily News says, “Sexiest? More like schlubbiest woman alive” but I don’t agree. Let’s face it: whether she’s wearing dirty sweats or a $10,000 gown, Mila still looks hot. I don’t think she’s “seemingly eager to shed her Sexiest Woman Alive title”, as the Daily News says, and I don’t think she looks “dumpy” or “frumpy”, either.

Also, I don’t understand this: “She’s a Golden Globe-nominated actress for Black Swan, not a member of Justin Bieber’s entourage.” So, wait… being nominated for an award means you can’t dress like a bum on your off days or when you’re on your way to the gym? Whoa. Where have I been? Why didn’t I know this?

The article then goes into detail on the more respectable celebrity females who take the time to dress casually chic rather than “dressing like an unwashed teenage boy.” That’s when I stopped reading. Sorry.

Let’s get this straight: sweatpants are awesome and I don’t appreciate anyone telling me they’re not. I also don’t appreciate the NY Daily News trying to make girls feel bad about themselves for not looking like they just stepped out of the pages of Vogue magazine every single day of their lives. I love fashion as much as anyone, but that doesn’t mean a girl can’t rock a pair of sweats whenever she wants. Give me a break!
