Jay Leno may be retiring from The Tonight Show, and there’s been a ton of talk lately about who may or may not replace him. So far the front runner appears to be Jimmy Fallon, who we absolutely love. But why not any funny ladies in Leno’s seat?

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite hilarious femmes who we think could easily do as well, if not better, that the most famous chin in America. And believe us, there were a lot to pick from, and it was hard to narrow this list down. Our criteria to do so: Not only should she be funny, but she should be inspiring and a cheerleader for the rest of us–and obviously, she’d have to be able to be clean enough for network TV!

If anyone ever uses the whole “women aren’t funny” argument around you, feel free to whip out YouTube clips of these hysterical gals to shut them up immediately. And also know that they are ignorant and idiotic. Because they are. And now, with no further adieu, our favorite laughter-inducing ladies!

You’ve probably seen and laughed really hard at Jessica on TV before–she’s been on every imaginable show a comic can nab a spot on–and it’s about time she got her own time to shine. You can check her out on YouTube, but you might want to grab a diaper first, because you may well pee your pants laughing.

You think Wanda Sykes would let celeb guests get away with anything? Think again. Aside from being super funny and not taking anyone’s crap, Wanda is fiercely smart and vocal about LGBT issues. We absolutely love her!

Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers was on the of the “permanent guest hosts” of The Tonight Show and an absolute pioneer for women in comedy. She paved the way for the rest of the females on this list! We doubt she’ll ever retire, but if she does, we’d love for it to be from one of the ultimate comedy benchmarks. Though she’s outspoken (she’s badmouthed Jay Leno himself, and we’re not a fan of the body shaming she occasionally does on Fashion Police), she’s necessary. She’s refreshing. And heck, she’s earned it.

We’re still hoping that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is cast as Batman in the new Justice League movie! | Source: WENN

We got so excited yesterday when we heard that Joseph Gordon-Levitt might be play Batman in the new Justice League movie! And then we got bummed out this morning when we learned that it’s not happening.

On one hand, it makes sense, because–spoiler alert!–The Dark Knight Rises establishes him as a different DC Comics character, and that would be difficult to forget and differentiate so soon. But it still would have been sort of awesome. Here are five reasons why we wish Joseph Gordon-Levitt would play Batman!

 
1. He could improve the “Batman voice.”
Dude, Christian Bale. We loved him as Bruce Wayne. Absolutely loved you. But not gonna lie, we didn’t like him quite as much as Batman, because it was really, really hard to understand what he was saying.

2. He could make Bruce Wayne more believable…
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is adorable, but he’s also got a guy-next-door vibe going. He could bring a new, almost everyman vibe to Bruce Wayne. And even though Bruce Wayne is rich, powerful, and strong, he’s still got a vulnerability to him that we think JGL could capture perfectly.

3. … Or he could replace Bruce Wayne entirely.
Since we’ve established that Christian Bale is an excellent Bruce Wayne, a risky–but potentially awesome–move would be to remake Batman without Bruce Wayne. If you saw TDKR, this theoretically could happen. (We’re trying not to give too much away!)

4. His comic timing.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt can do funny and serious, which would make him perfect for Justice League. If it’s anything like The Avengers, there’s going to be humor injected into the script, and who better to balance out Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern than JGL as Batman?

5. Maybe he’ll finally get his girl.
It broke our hearts when Zooey Deschanel left him in the dust in 500 Days of Summer, but c’mon–who can resist a guy in a cape? (And just throwing this out there, but Zooey shares a lot of features in common with Wonder Woman!)

We’re thankful for these popcorn flicks this year! | Source: ShutterStock

With the apocalypse supposedly looming in December, the world will end on a pretty awesome note–at least in terms of movies. 2012 brought us so many quality flicks that narrowing down this list was actually tough. When you’re giving thanks tomorrow for everything you’ve got, maybe also express some gratitude for the great cinema that Hollywood gifted us this year. From drama to action to eye candy, we had a bit of everything.

One theme we saw in a whole lot of 2012 movies? Girls kicking butt. We love that quite a bit.

We should note that we lurved all these movies so much that we’re putting them in no particular order, because they’re all so different but so rad that it would be a little impossible to rank them! (Okay, okay, so maybe The Avengers is at the top for a reason, but the rest are totally tied.)

The Avengers

Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, The Hulk, Hawkeye, Loki (we heart Tom Hiddleston–such a nice dude in real life). And Samuel L. Jackson, who, like sprinkles, makes everything he’s in just that much better. All at once. How did our brains not explode?

Skyfall

While Quantum of Solace wasn’t the best Bond flick we’ve seen, Skyfall won over fans who didn’t even really dig the spy franchise before. Daniel Craig and Co. brought Bond back to his Casino Royale glory–scrappy, a little angry, and a lot of fun to watch. And we loved Adele’s theme song, too!

Prometheus

This may be the most polarizing movie on the list–half of audiences loved it, half hated it. That’s the beauty of the high-tension Prometheus: It made us all think, didn’t answer a lot of questions, and provided a whole lot of post-movie conversation.

The Hunger Games

Girl power at its best, with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen. She kicked butt, she took names, and the movie was pretty loyal to the books (which were awesome). And it sparked a new debate: Team Gale vs. Teem Peeta!

The Amazing Spider-Man

The Expendables 2

Having a bad day? Cozy up to this action packed sequel to the gloriously absurd original and let off some steam–and stare at Liam Hemsworth at the same time. (Miley knows how to pick ‘em!) There’s even girl power in this one courtesy of Yu Nan! Love.

The Cabin In The Woods

The Dark Knight Rises

Aside from the awesomeness of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, the final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise starred Bane. While no one can compare to the late Heath Ledger’s Joker, in terms of the comics, Bane is the most insane, awesome villain Batman’s ever faced, and the film did him justice–even if his voice (like Christian Bale’s Batman) was a little odd.

Whether or not you’re into history, you’ll dig Lincoln. Why? Because you’ll forget that Daniel Day-Lewis is playing Lincoln. You’ll think he is Lincoln.

Whether or not you were a Twihard, you can all agree that this movie is one we can all be grateful for. For some of us, it was bittersweet: The movie was good, but now it’s all over! For some of us, it was just sweet: Thank God, it’s over!

Johnny Depp is going from Jack Sparrow to William Shakespeare. | Source: WENN

Is Johnny Depp trading his Mad Hatter role for Macbeth? The eccentric, eclectic, and somehow ageless movie star is developing a TV series based on all of Shakespeare’s plays.

Details on the show are still murky, but so far we know this: The show will be a scripted series that gives a “modern take” on Shakespeare’s works, intertwining plots, characters, and story lines from each. So we’re thinking we’ll get to see, say, Tybalt sparring with Iago (or teaming up with him–a real axis of evil right there!) or maybe Romeo making out with Ophelia in a moment of weakness.

It’s unclear exactly what kind of role Johnny Depp will have in the project, as it’s still in development, but as a producer, his name will be all over this. We’re hoping he’ll guest star in at least a few episodes–or, you know, take on every single romantic lead role (we can dream).

Johnny Depp’s project will be the latest in a long line of Shakespeare adaptions for TV and movies–remember 10 Things I Hate About You (based on The Taming of the Shrew) and Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo in William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet? On a more recent note, some could say Sons of Anarchy is essentially based on Hamlet, just with motorcycles and leather instead of swords and poison.

We think Johnny Depp would be a pretty badass (and beautiful!) Hamlet, but we’d love to see him in a villain role, too. No one ever roots for Iago in Othello, but what if he were played by the same dude who made Captain Jack Sparrow a household name? Or a meddling, douchebag Polonius? Though since he’s got a production credit–and producers run stuff–maybe he’ll take on Prospero from The Tempest. The possibilities are pretty endless–and pretty freakin’ exciting!

And so did the judges’ panel, with unanimous praise from Demi Lovato, who gave her a hug and a pep talk, Britney Spears, L.A. Reid, and Simon Cowell, who Demz even pointed out was weepy at Jillian’s story. Watch the whole she-bang right here:

Here’s the thing, though: Criticism and bullying are two really different things, and that’s something that Demi Lovato actually pointed out in a new interview.

“I think bullying is something that’s totally different than criticism,” Demi said. “Bullying, I think, can be when you’re just … harsh really for no reason. I feel when you’re giving criticism, you’re only trying to help somebody with their performance or their voice or whatever. I think definitely there could be a fine line between some jokes, but for me, ultimately, I’m just having fun and trying to give them criticism.”

We totally agree with Demi on this one. Criticism is something that people, especially performers on shows like X Factor, American Idol, and The Voice actively seek out–even when they don’t necessarily like what they hear. When you audition for a show like this, you know what you’re getting into, and usually, the judges (save occasionally for Simon!) are polite, if direct, with their advice and perspectives. At the end of the day, even when criticism is negative on the surface, it’s still helpful, because it forces you to look at something differently and reassess–which will ultimately help you improve.

Bullying, however, is unwarranted and unduly cruel, and it benefits absolutely no one. No one asks to be bullied, and nothing good comes out of being bullied or bullying anyone else. Even Simon knows when to give it a rest!

Think of it this way: Criticism would be Demi or Simon telling someone at an X Factor audition, “You need to work on your pitch,” whereas bullying would be Simon and Demi going up to someone on the street humming along to their iPod and being like, “You’re a douchebag and that is the worst thing I’ve ever heard. Also, your mom is fat.” See the difference here?

Ursula was a pretty hot, sassy villain already. Where did the rest of her go?! | Source

Remember Ursula from The Little Mermaid? She was fabulously full-figured, super sassy, and, yeah, evil–but dude, she was so much fun to watch, wasn’t she? From her thunderous voice to her python-tight tentacle grip, Ursula was one of the original badasses from our childhoods, and she was also one of the only full-figured cartoon characters, despite being a villain.

But uh, what the heck happened to her now? Disney completely revamped Ursula’s appearance for their Disney Villains design collection, which includes makeup (their nail polishes look kind of awesome, not gonna lie), dolls, and other items (journals, etc.). Ursula now sports a dark purple seaweed-textured skirt instead of her trademark black tentacles and a rather gaunt body type, which is a really stark contrast to her original full-figured, wicked glory. She actually looks a lot more like Cruella DeVille from 101 Dalmatians than like, well, Ursula. Even her cropped ‘do is different–she sports a white bouffant instead now, and her full red lips are now narrow and purple. Take a look at the difference:

To be fair, Ursula isn’t the only Disney villain to get a makeover. The Queen of Hearts looks like a hybrid of her cartoon and live-action version, more svelte and more made up, but donning the original costume. The Wicked Queen from Snow White has a new hair style, too. But Ursula’s transformation is the most jarring. If it weren’t for the seashell, she’d be pretty much unrecognizable.

The dramatic transformation of Ursula raises a few questions. Firstly, since the collection is reflective of design–of beauty, high fashion, and glamour–thinning down Ursula can make us ask, “Are full figures not glamorous?” This new look isn’t different from a lot of runway model body types (save for the greenish blue skin, naturally), so it bums us out a little that for Ursula to fit into a designer collection, she has to lose about 75 percent of her body weight.

Second, the thinning of Ursula and the Queen of Hearts may reflect and reinforce society’s stereotypes that thin women are wicked, shallow, and snobby–think of how Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother and the three fairies (Flora, Fauna, and the ultra-adorbs Meriwether) in Sleeping Beauty were all round and friendly. Who says thin women can’t be helpful and larger ones can’t be malicious?

And third, does Ursula having only one sharp chin instead of a few rounder ones simply going along with our visions of what represents a Disney villain as a whole? Perhaps.

But all of these questions and their prospective answers drive home that certain body types appeal to certain stereotypes–and none of those are too great. All in all, we gotta say: With her vermilion pout and dramatic eyeshadow of yore–not to mention her massive, heaving bosom and unapologetic curves–we kinda think the old Ursula was a lot more fabulous. The new one is still cool in her own right (the dress is pretty!), but compared to the cartoon Ursula, she looks like a poor, unfortunate, and rather hungry–and Cruella DeVille doppelganger-like–soul.

Do You Love Tinkerbell? We Don’t!

I was super surprised to hear this–but since we don’t want to promote hateful people on the site, I did my research to see what all the drama was about. Turns out, back in 2009, Katy posted a tweet that was offensive to the transgender community. Now, I don’t know Katy (and I’m pretty sure the girls who were so quick to say she’s transphobic don’t either), but I don’t think it’s a stretch to guess that the girl who dedicated her song “Firework” to the “It Gets Better Campaign” which supports bullied gay girls and guys either 1) didn’t think about her tweet before she sent it and didn’t mean it to offend anybody–but now feels bad about it, or 2) that she just thought it was funny but now feels terrible about it and wants to show the world that she’s a better person than that.

Either scenario resulted in a tweet that upset people, which I’m not saying is good, but I don’t think Katy should have to be stuck with that bad decision three years after the fact. It’s not like she shot someone or set out to ruin someone’s life–she just said something completely thoughtless.

Why shouldn’t we let celebrities make mistakes, too, without labeling them forever as bad people? I get it that their words have a greater impact because all eyes are on them–but nobody’s perfect. We’re all just human here (even the stars among us), and the great thing about life is that it’s not static. We all (you, me, and even Katy Perry) have the ability to grow and learn and be better people each and every day. We all do totally stupid stuff from time-to-time, and hopefully those experiences make us better people instead of worse.

Let’s try to look at people (and yes, even celebrities!) with a little compassion before we go labeling them as “phobic” this or “anti” that. After all, how can you expect anyone to change for the better when you don’t give them a chance?

Following his tumultuous relationship with Bristol (the former couple can’t seem to agree on anything, from whether Tripp was planned to whether or not they were drunk on wine coolers when they first had sex), you’d think Levi was too busy posing for Playgirl and penning tell-all books to handle another kid. Despite his busy PR schedule though, the 21-year-old Levi Johnston will be a dad again, this time with girlfriend Sunny Oglesby.

We don’t know for sure, of course, but it could be that this pregnancy happened because this Alaskan Romeo was too preoccupied to use protection: Levi has admitted that his new baby wasn’t planned, but that he’s “so excited” to be a dad again. He told TMZ, “Things happen and we are both happy with what came of it.” Interesting that these “things”–aka an “accidental pregnancy“–happened, and were announced when Sarah Palin is co-hosting the Today Show this week. Just sayin’!

Here’s the thing, though: pregnancies don’t just happen. They happen if you and your partner don’t take the proper steps to prevent them. Levi’s getting a lot of flack for this, but Sunny Oglesby is equally responsible for her body. (We think the world just figured that Levi would know better from experience by now.)

Seeing as you can’t get yourself pregnant (at least not without lengthy paperwork and a plan), pregnancy prevention and contraception isn’t just up to you–or your guy. It’s a shared responsibility. Even if you’re on the Pill, a guy should still use a condom–it’s the only way besides abstinence to prevent STDs, and it provides extra protection against pregnancy. Plus, sex is better when you’re safe, because you can relax and enjoy it instead of freaking out.

Remember Teen Mom Jamie Lynn Spears? Find Out What Happened To Her!

Big ups to our girl Taylor Swift, who took home the biggest trophy of the night at last night’s 2012 ACM Awards! Our girl Tay was named Entertainer of the Year, the biggest honor of the ceremony, for the second year straight. It was her second big win in two days, too–the night before she took home the Big Help Award at the Kids’ Choice Awards for giving back to the community and being generally awesome and inspirational.

Taylor was the second female to win Entertainer of the Year two years in a row, coming after Carrie Underwood, who also performed at the show. Even her competition, Blake Shelton, admitted that she deserved to win, and he’s totally right. Taylor gives a face to country music that even people who normally can’t stand country music can both recognize and appreciate–and she sells a whole lot of records. Taylor shows there’s more to country music than pick up trucks and broken hearts. That’s our girl!

Taylor wasn’t the only big winner for gals at the ACM Awards, though. Petite powerhouse Miranda Lambert snagged the Female Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year, while female-fronted Lady Antebellum won Vocal Group of the Year. We’re particularly stoked for Miranda, since she’s so outspoken in her empowerment of young women (and we gotta say, her open disdain for Chris Brown is a little refreshing). That and come on, how cute is she?

Just because we rooted a little more loudly for our ladies doesn’t mean girls and boys can’t get along, though. Kelly Clarkson‘s collaboration with Jason Aldean, “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” earned two awards: Single of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year. We don’t think it would have been as celebrated a tune without the American Idol alum’s gorgeous pipes! Thompson Square took home a trophy for Vocal Duo of the Year, too, proving that the battle of the sexes doesn’t have to be a battle after all.

News like this makes us want to put on cowboy boots, kick back and celebrate!
