I had just started dating a guy at college when one of his friends from home came to stay with us for the weekend. I had something to do early in the morning, so I didn’t really feel like being a part of their partying, but I wanted to spend time with my new boyfriend and I thought I should make the effort to hang out with my BF’s visitor. I decided I would go, and just call it an early night. Well, that didn’t happen.

I volunteered to be the designated driver, but I explained I kind of wanted to head out a little on the early side, which everyone said was fine. When we eventually left the off-campus party, my BF’s friend decided he wanted to take his cup of booze on the walk back to the car. You may be aware that there is a little thing called an open container law, and you can’t just wander with your cup of alcohol on public property. He didn’t listen to me when I told him he had to leave the cup behind, and by a stroke of what I can only call jussssttttt awesomeeee luck, a cop drove by us and immediately stopped.

The friend wasn’t in a great position to deal with the cop and my drunk friends (who were all underage) scattered to hide. This left me with this friend who I barely knew at all and a cop who was less than pleased about this drinking violation. Next thing I know, he is getting arrested and put in the back of the cop car.

Ummm… what do I do now?! Basically I had to bail him out. I didn’t even know where the police headquarters were. It was the middle of the night and I had no cash. My other friends all pooled their money together for me, so I dropped them back off on campus and did a quick search online to try and figure out where I had to go next.

I got back in the car and my boyfriend rode with me to where I was pretty sure we had to go to bail out his friend. After I parked, we started walking toward the police headquarters, and my BF was apparently under the impression that he was going to go in and deal with it. I had to remind him that he was wasn’t 21 and going drunk into a place with cops was probably only going to add to our problems.

I could see my boyfriend’s friend on a little security camera at the main desk when I walked in to the police headquarters. He was sitting in a back room and still complaining, and the annoyed woman working at the front desk was like, “Oh, is that your boyfriend?” I just quietly said no, but felt like it was going to be too much to explain how actually – funny story – I barely knew him at all! Still, I couldn’t just leave him there, especially when I really liked my BF.

I had never posted bail for anyone and had no idea what was the usual protocol. I remember that they wanted me to sign something, but I didn’t want my name associated with anything! I wound up just kind of scribbling a signature, handing over the cash and the quickly took him with me.

When we left the front doors, he started putting on this elaborate display of gratitude, as if he’d been there for decades rather than just two hours. Whatever, I was just glad to be out of there. But wait – the cops apparently still had his phone and he wanted to go back in.

Uh, no. The last thing I was doing was letting him go back in. After the embarrassment of having to go in there the first time to get him, I had to go back yet again and request his phone. My BF and he then fought the whole way back to the car, which was just the icing on the cake of this great evening. Basically I got home about three hours later than I needed to and barely got to sleep before I had to wake up again.

I showed up the next morning to my event pretty darn tired, but I will say that in the sober light of morning, everyone was super apologetic. I have to say that looking back, I was never really mad about the whole thing because the whole night was just super weird and a little surreal. But there you have it – the worst night out I’ve ever had with a BF.

Adam Levine knows how to do a lot of things: He’s an amazing musician (not only can he sing and play guitar, but he plays drums and more, too). He’s an awesome songwriter. He’s a great coach on The Voice and comes across as a pretty nice guy. He’s also not a bad actor, as evidenced by his gruesome turn on American Horror Story.

But there’s one thing I know firsthand that Adam Levine doesn’t know how to do: He has no clue how to pick up girls.

Ok. So, here’s the story. I was at a music festival one July with my flamboyantly gay male BFF, who works for an entertainment news show. He had laminates for us, which pretty much grant all-access to wherever you want: backstage, photo pits, anywhere short of a band’s personal trailer (because those are usually controlled by the band’s own security).

We hopped over to the catering tent, which was where the bands and media ate, because we were starving. The guys from Maroon 5 were there, and my pal started geeking out a little bit, but he was quiet about it and maintained his composure–at least on the outside. We were waiting in the buffet line for our food when Adam Levine approached us. He was shorter than I expected (but I’m barely 5’0″, so I can’t really talk), and he seemed a little out of it and looked sort of dirty–I figured it was the heat or something. In any case, my buddy tried chatting him up, but Adam clearly wasn’t having it: a lot of “Mmmhmms,” “uh huhs,” and “huhs.” He was more interested in my boobs, which were actually pretty well-contained that day.

My buddy was asking him about their set for that day and asked politely if he Adam would sign a photo he had. Adam Levine, who wasn’t yet dating supermodels–or maybe was just bored because none were around that day–scribbled on the pic while staring at my boobs the whole time, then tried getting me to leave my pal and hang out with him in their trailer: “C’mon, beautiful. Let’s get outta here . . . he’ll be okay without you for a while.” Seriously. Nothing before that. He just wanted me to go with him.

Uh, didn’t happen. For a few reasons: First off, he was so spacey and off that I had no clue what I’d be getting into. Again, it could have been the heat or just jet lag from traveling around so much, but it was still weird. Second, Adam Levine is old enough to know that he should at least pretend to know where a girl’s eyes are, if only momentarily. Third, my friend is and was my top priority. Just to clarify: I don’t think Adam Levine was rude to my friend because was gay. I don’t think that made a bit of difference to him at all, and I don’t think he’s homophobic by any means. I think he just didn’t want to talk to anybody that he didn’t plan on having sex with. But you know how the Spice Girls were all like, “If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends?” It’s a good rule to live by. If a guy is a douchebag to your friends, he can’t possibly give a crap about you. And if he doesn’t give a crap about you, he’s probably going to be a bad lay. Even if he sings about having moves like Jagger.
