7 Unexpected Things That Can Make Your Period Cramps Worse

Periods can be a pretty hellish experience. Think about it, have you ever met someone who was excited to get their period every month? Exactly. Unfortunately, the reality for life as a girl is that we’re going to have to grin and bear it through some of the symptoms of menstruation. That being said, there are things we can do for serious pain and there are things we can avoid that sometimes make PMS symptoms worse.

I don’t know about you, but I find it’s comforting to know that I can be more in control of my PMS. Depending on what I do, I can make things better…or I could accidentally make things worse. Drinking Lots Of Caffeine

Sorry, caffeine addicts, but your latte could actually be making cramps worse. Part of the reason could have to do with coffee being dehydrating along with a diuretic. If you're a proper coffee addict, you will obviously not want to go cold turkey during your period because that will likely cause other side effects. Instead, try to limit the amount of cups you consume.

Doing High-Impact Exercises

If you're a runner or someone who likes to do high intensity classes, you might want to consider doing different exercises during your period because all the running and bouncing in high impact workouts could actually lead to worse cramps. On the other hand, low-impact exercises like light jogging, walking, yoga, and Pilates can actually help with period pain.

Eating Lots Of Sugar

Do you get cravings during your period? Hopefully you don't start craving sweets because the sugar content can actually make period cramps worse. I know that sucks to hear if you have a sweet tooth or you like to eat a pint of ice cream on your period. Try to cut back some of the sugar the next time the crimson tide comes and see if it makes a difference.

Being Stressed Out AF

If you haven't figured it out by now, stress pretty much makes everything worse. I get that you have a lot going on, but I want you to try and chill because it will help your life, your relationships, and probably your period cramps.

Not Getting Enough Sleep

You might pride yourself on being a night owl who can function on four hours of sleep. In reality, you might not actually be as productive as you think you're being. What's more, your lack of sleep could be making your period cramps worse because it throws off your body chemicals. Cut down your caffeine consumption like we already discussed and try to avoid looking at your phone or the TV close to bedtime because the blue light can mess up your sleep cycle. Aim to get at least seven hours of shuteye.

Eating Fatty, Salty Foods

Who would have thought that food has such an impact on your period cramps? I've already discussed sugar, know I have some bad news for people who love salty, fatty foods. All of those chips and burritos you're scoffing during your period could be contributing to the cramps you're getting.

Not Eating Enough Food Regularly

It's not just about what you eat, it's also about how often you eat and how much. I get that if you're not feeling well, you might be tempted to cut back on what you're eating. That's actually not good because when you go without eating, the stomach acids can build up and cramping can get worse. Aim to have three meals a day. That means no skipping breakfast.
