Here Are The 14 Biggest Fashion Trends Of 2018 You Need To Know About

The start of 2018 is just around the corner, which means lots of exciting new things. Just think about new movies, potential new relationships, and new styles that might be coming your way. I always enjoy coming up with some fresh New Year’s resolutions, but the thing that I’m actually most excited about for the new year is the brand-spanking-new fashion trends.

Sure, we get a lot of new fashion trends throughout the year, thanks to New York Fashion Week and red carpets, but the new year is a time for all things fresh, and that includes new looks. Whether you want to spruce up your style or try something totally different, there are a lot of options. Of course, various trends will pop up throughout the year, as they always do, but you can be pretty sure that the below trends will also be there as well.

Some of these upcoming trends started in 2017, but they’re only expected to get bigger in the next few months. So, if you’re looking for some ways to update your closet, have a look at the fashion trends that are going to be big in 2018:

1. Embellished Denim

I doubt that denim is ever going to leave our lives. In 2018, expect to see styles that go way, way beyond basic blues. You might have picked up on the trend given that Instagram seems to be littered with denim decorated with all sorts of things from beads to patches to sequins. FYI: Don’t limit the look to just jeans. You can go for jackets, shirts, dresses, and even accessories too.

2. Logomania

Logos are back, people. We went through a period after the excess of logomania in the early aughts were minimalism was the thing. Now, any sort of logo is considered fashionable whether it’s Chanel, Supreme, Zara, or a DIY one. Therefore, don’t feel like you can only participate in the trend if you have designer clothes. It works for all budgets.

3. Vinyl Everything

First it was all about leather (and leather look) fabrics. Unexpectedly, vinyl became a hit in the latter half of 2017. It began with slouchy vinyl pants, but it is quickly expanding into jackets. I’ll admit that that the fabric might feel weird to wear compared to your usual polyester and cottons. And it might make noises when you walk, but it definitely has Insta-cool.

4. Ultra Violet

If you’ve been wondering why people online have been talking about purple, namely ultra violet for the last week or so, it’s because the shade has been announced as the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year. Pantone is a color forecasting agency so they specialize in predicting trends based on thorough research. Even without the title, the purple shade is still pretty AF.

5. Statement Boots

Sneakers were the thing, but boots are huge, and it’s not just because it’s winter. White boots, sock boots, embellished boots, velour boots, you name it, it had its time in the spotlight in 2017. Expect things to carry into 2018 with boots being worn well into festival season. Therefore, make sure you’re keeping your boots in good condition.

6. Big Sleeves

I never really thought about the impact of sleeves in fashion until this year. Shoulders, yes, but sleeves? They were just sort of there…or not. Now, they’re becoming the statement detail of many tops and dresses. The trend is for dramatically flared bell sleeves or super-long ones, but feel free to make it your own.

7. Mini Sunglasses

Sunglasses used to be so supersized that they looked like bug eyes. As with a lot of fashion trends, things have done a 180 with smaller sunglasses now gaining attention. If you document style patterns in Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Gigi Hadid’s Instagrams, you have probably picked up on the trend.

8. Head-to-Toe Red

Red may not have been named the 2018 Pantone Color, but it’s still a very popular shade. So much so that the trend isn’t just about one red piece —
it’s about wearing the fiery shade from head to toe. It might seem a bit intimidating, especially if you’re a lover of black, but give it a try. It’s also perfect for the holidays.

9. Fun Suits

I know that putting the word “fun” with “suits” might initially seem wrong, but stay with me. Suits are being taken out of stuffy boardrooms and into the wardrobes of every Instagram cool girl. It started with blazers and now it’s carrying to co-ords. You don’t need to have an office job to work a suit. You just need to find one you love whether it’s printed, a bold color, or a cool shape. Remember, you can also break up your pieces.

10. Teddy Bear Coats

Don’t worry, no teddy bears were harmed in the making of this trend. You know how everyone and their mama was wearing faux fur coats for the last few years? Well, the trend is expanding to a fuzzier look. You might have seen people wearing cozy-looking coats and wondered what they were. Chances are they’re teddy bear styles.

11. Maximalist Dressing

If you’re a follower of runway trends, you will know that Gucci is pretty much the brand to look to for fashion inspo. Most of us cannot afford the designer price tags of the stuff on the runway, but we can get the Gucci look. That means clashing colors, piling on the accessories, and pretty much forgetting all of the fashion rules that you know. It’s about having fun, and that’s what fashion really should be.

12. Plastic Accessories and Clothes

I know what you’re thinking right now and it’s probably “WTF?!” Plastic builds on the vinyl trend, but takes it to see-through dimensions. Remember the jeans with the clear knees that went viral in 2017? People might have been scratching their head about those, but expect to see that clear look appearing more and more. Game to try it? Perspex accessories are an easy way to do it.

13. Newsboy Caps

Floppy hats seemed to have reigned supreme for what felt like a decade. Now, the newsboy cap is having a moment. If you’re looking for something to protect your head, try one. The hats have a cool mod look. Plus, they feel fancier than a baseball cap. Who knows, you might even become a hat girl after wearing one.

14. Plaid

Plaid is a classic fabric. Some might not even consider it a trend. It’s one of those things like LBDs or jeans. It doesn’t ever really go out of style. However, it’s difficult to deny that the fabric is definitely having a moment. A quick Instagram scroll will tell you that much. Plaid pants are one of the most popular ways to go, but anything with tartan will work.
