Can You Get An STD From Masturbating?

The main goal of masturbating is to have fun and enjoy yourself. You should settle in your bed, get nice and cozy, maybe even light some candles, and get it on. It’s supposed to be a fun and relaxing activity to help you ~get to know~ your body. And, most of the time, masturbating is fun and low-key! But, as with most things good, there is always that lingering feeling of anxiety in the back of your mind. It might seem irrational or weird, but you can’t help but shake the idea. And when it comes to masturbating, a lot of people can’t shake the idea that masturbating can actually cause STDs. Let’s chat about this, shall we?

I know that you think that any sort of sexual act can cause an STD, but that’s pretty false. An STD can’t just appear when you are masturbating alone, which is the good news! I know you might get anxious about these things, but it’s okay. This rumor can probably be traced back to the mid-20th century, when masturbating was discouraged, so it became popular for parents to tell kids that masturbating would do bad things to you, like make you go blind or grow hair everywhere. Those things will not happen, and you will not get an STD from masturbating on the solo. If you do find yourself experiencing itchiness or irritation down there after you masturbate, you should see a doctor ASAP. A little bit of irritation is normal, but you want to be safe when it comes to your vagina.

On the other hand, if you and a partner are doing a mutual masturbation thing, AKA laying in bed together, masturbating at the same time, it is possible for you to get an STD that way, if your partner has an STD and their “fluids” get near your vagina. STDs are caused by the exchange of fluids between two people. If you somehow get someone’s bodily fluids on your hand and then masturbate, then you could potentially contract an STD.

The main takeaway here is that you can’t get an STD from masturbating on your own. You want to make sure you masturbate with clean hands to make sure you don’t get any bacteria down there. If you happen to be with someone who has an STD and they get their semen hear your vagina, then it is possible to contract an STD. Just remember to always be safe and have fun!
