7 Gross, Embarrassing Things That Happen To Everyone During Sex

If you have ever done anything remotely sexual with a human person—whether that means kissing, holding hands, or simply holding eye contact with someone for a prolonged period of time—you will know that, most of the time, things don’t exactly go as clean and uncomplicated as you’ve seen it portrayed in the movies. Teeth knock together. Hands get sweaty. People blink.

Basically, anything involving other people is messy and complicated. Sex is no different! There are a ton of weird, borderline gross things that happen to everyone during sex that, in any other context, would be downright disgusting. The good news? Sexual arousal limits your ability to feel disgust, first of all, so it won’t feel all that gross to you in the moment. And, of course, these things happen to pretty much everyone. So, check out these gross things that happen to everyone during sex:

Queefs

AKA a vagina fart. This happens when air in the vagina gets displaced and huffs out with an audible, um, toot. This can happen during all kinds of activities, whether it's penetrative sex or yoga. If a queef happens to you (and it almost certainly will at some point in your life), just laugh it off and keep things moving. It's cool! It happens to everyone.

Farts

And, of course, it's possible that you could experience a regular, non-vaginal fart during sex, too. This is also fine! It might not be, like, ideal--not many people leave room for a flatulence sequence in their sex fantasies--but it happens to everyone. If your partner is, like, a cool, normal person, they'll be okay with it.

Pooping

If you've ever considered anal sex, you might be concerned about pooping when it's going on. The truth? It's quite possible! Basically, the deeper the penetration is, and the bigger the size of whatever is penetrating you is, the more likely you'll be to poop during anal. It's not inevitable, obviously, and it definitely won't happen every time, but it's something that you should probably be prepared for. If that makes you feel comfortable, try to only have anal with someone you're comfortable with maybe seeing some of your poop. (And vice versa!)

Getting A Surprise Period

Maybe you forgot your period was on its way. Or you started spotting. Or something got a little too rough, which caused some bleeding. No matter what its cause is, if you notice some blood during sex, you should probably take a quick break and figure out why, exactly, you're bleeding.  This isn't because there is anything inherently shameful about being on your period and having sex at the same time (period sex is fun and you should try it!) but rather because the longer you wait, the less chance you have of saving your sheets.  Plus, if it's something other than your that's causing the bleeding (like a vaginal scratch or tear), you probably want to stop up the bleeding and make sure it isn't a serious injury.

Accidental Activation Of Your Gag Reflex

Another thing that might happen during oral sex? Your gag reflex. Which, as its name implies, could lead to some gagging or a small amount of vomit. This is most likely to happen if you go faster than you're used to, try deep throating, ate a lot of food within the past hour or so, or have been drinking alcohol. If it happens frequently when you aren't doing those things--as in, like, pretty much every time you try to go down on someone--you might want to talk to your doctor. It will probably be a little embarrassing, sure, but they might be able to help you figure out a way to avoid feeling the urge to puke every time you attempt oral.

Getting Pubes In Unexpected Places

Look. Not to be crude, but if you perform oral on someone, chances of getting a pube stuck somewhere in or around your mouth is pretty high. (And vice versa.) I don't make the rules! Fortunately, this one is pretty easy to deal with--all you have to do is fish it out with your hands. Or, if you're feeling extra ~sensual~ you can have your partner do it for you. (Or not! It's up to you.)

Bodily Fluids

You know, like, sweat. Or the natural lubrication that comes from your vagina. Or the actual lube that you use. Or...something else! All of this combined generally contributes to the "wet spot"--you know, that small, damp patch of, um, something that shows up on the sheets after sex--and it's really not a big deal. You won't notice it during sex and, if it bothers you afterward, you can take a quick shower or lay a towel down as a preemptive measure.
