8 Popular Beauty Tips That Get Way More Hype Than They Deserve

If you have done any kind of beauty-related research on the internet, chances are good that you’ve seen a lot of repeated information. You know, like, drinking more water. Eating enough probiotics. Coconut oil. (For what? Nothing important! Just everything!)

These tips are presented in such a way as to make them seem foolproof for everyone–so, if they don’t work for you, it’s easy to convince yourself that there is something wrong with you. But, as is the case with most things of this nature, it’s not really you–rather, it’s the fact that a lot of the most popular beauty tips and products simply aren’t as good as your favorite Instagram fitness model says they are. This, bascially, was the point of a Reddit thread I found recently that asked the question: “What over-hyped health/beauty tip are you tired of hearing?” There are a lot of them! So, check out these popular beauty items and products that, according to Reddit, get way more credit and hype than they deserve:

Just Use Coconut Oil For Everything!

Let's talk about the biggest beauty scam of all time--coconut oil. Can it be good for some people? Sure. Is it good for, say, cooking? Probably. But if you've ever tried to use coconut oil for everything, you'll know that it doesn't really work.  Skittlesfortiddles said, "Coconut oil literally clogs your pores. Doesn't matter how much you use, or who you are. It seals all of the sh*t under your skin." So, if you're acne-prone, try not to rely on coconut oil as a face wash or moisturizer.

Just Stop Being Stressed!

Feeling stressed? Well, in that case, why don't you just think about how much this stress is impacting your outward appearance? Does that help? Probably not. ChusshaHime said, "This tip is technically true but so watered down, vague, and laughably 'easier said than done'--anytime I hear or read things in reference to how damaging stress can be to your health, the tip is "decrease stress in your life. Well, gee, thanks now I can rest easy." Ha. Yeah.

Just Run Some Laps To Cure Your Depression!

Localgyro said, "Just work out and your depression will go away! You just need to want it enough!" Haha. This is ...patently false. Some people say that exercising has helped with their depression, so it's definitely worth considering if you suffer from depression, but acting as though it can be used in place of medication and therapy is harmful.

Just Drink Some More Water!

Tc88 said, "That if you drink enough water, all your health problems will disappear." Yeah. Obviously, you should be drinking water--being dehydrated won't benefit you in any way--but it's absurd to act as though drinking water is going to cure every single health and beauty ailment you may or may not have.

Just Do A Juice Cleanse!

Need a beauty myth that relies on your vague fear of "toxins?"Try juice cleanses. Or, you know, don't. Writeandknow said, "Juice cleanses. Is it really safe to eat only pineapple for six weeks?" It...is not. Juice cleanses are not safe! In fact, in a lot of cases, they can lead to long-term health issues. If there is one thing you take away from this post, let it be this.

Just Sleep With Your Bra On!

Crowgirl626EV said, "That if you sleep with a bra on it will help stop sagging/drooping. A) It’s not 100% confirmed and B) I don’t care, bras are uncomfortable during the day and make everything so sweaty, why would I sleep with it?" This is a weird beauty myth that, despite having been disproved, still persists to this day. But, please--don't sleep in your bra. It will only cause you discomfort.

Just Stop Washing Your Hair!

todayonbloopers said that "No shampoo" is the beauty tip that irks them most. They continued,  saying, "Especially that regimen of baking soda and vinegar that wrecks hair over time. Reducing shampoo, good for most people. Doing away with it altogether? Not so much." Fruitjerky had evidence to back that up, saying "Yeah, I tried that for awhile and my hair turned into shredded wheat. I wash once a week and use dry shampoo the last couple of days--hair's looking much better." So, yeah. Please wash your hair!

Just Meditate!

Faetingxfarts said that the tip they can't stand is hearing people say "'Just meditate.' I know it's helpful for many but sometimes a problem needs a greater solution than merely de-stressing and changing your perspective. I’m tired of hearing this detached from any message about taking action and actively changing one’s stressful circumstances." Yep! People tend to act as though the act to decide to meditate is enough to heal every single beauty and health issue that a person might have. It's definitely helpful for a lot of people! But if you start meditation with the sole intention of it turning your entire life around, you're probably going to be disappointed.
