15 DIY Costumes You Can Make With A Black Dress

If you are like most girls of a certain age who live in society, I am going to take a gamble and say that you probably have a black dress hanging in your closet. But this isn’t just a dress that happens to be black. Rather, it is a little black dress, which means that it is structured, sorta-formal, and, in theory, hits just above the knee. And you have it because, at some point, someone told you that you simply must get one. But have you ever actually used it?

Yeah. That’s what I thought.

Of course, everyone thinks that they’re going to get some chance to whip out a Blair Waldorf or Veronica Lodge look for, like, a random day at a school, but, if you are like most high school or college-age students who aren’t actually played by a 23-year-old actress on a popular CW drama, chances are good that you don’t actually get to do that all that often.

Fortunately, there’s a solution for that. You can actually be Blair Waldorf or Veronica Lodge or any other black dress-clad femme fatale easily by using your black dress as part of your Halloween costume this year. So, check out these awesome DIY Halloween costumes that only require a black dress:

Wednesday Addams

Sure, Wednesday Addams might be a slightly cliche costume. But some things are cliche for a reason, and this is one of them! All you need to put it together is a black dress, white collar, and braided hair.

Morticia Addams

Or, if you want to be a little more ~unique~, you can go as Wednesday Addams' mom, Morticia. All you need is a long black dress and black wig.

Posh Spice

Got a black dress and a lob (or a lob wig)? go as Posh Spice! You can gather your friends and have them go as the rest of the Spice Girls or just go solo. It's the Posh thing to do.

Bat

This costume looks complicated, but all you need is a black dress, old black t-shirts to be cut into the wings, a headband, and some hot glue.

Veronica Lodge

"Riverdale" seems to be everyone's favorite show right now--take advantage of that by picking out your best LBD and putting a detachable collar over it.

Maleficent

This costume definitely needs some DIY work--those Maleficent horns won't make themselves--but the payoff is pretty great.

Black Swan

If you have a lacy dress, add a pair of wings to the back. Put on some dramatic makeup, and you'll be the spitting image of the Black Swan.

Blair Waldorf

Technically, this is a black skirt costume, not a black dress costume. But it's a classic, and, if it speaks to you, you should go for it.

Audrey Hepburn In Breakfast At Tiffany's

The ultimate LBD costume! All you need to add to it is a string of pearls, sunglasses, black gloves, and a tiara.

Or, for a little more clout, you can add an actual Tiffany's bag. It's up to you!

Little Red Riding Hood

For a super simple, cute costume, get a red cape to put over your black dress. Pair with knee socks and you'll be the perfect Little Red Riding Hood!

A Witch

This might be the easiest black dress costume of all--all you need to add to it is a witch's hat, and you'll be good to go.

Burglar

If your LBD happens to be striped, you can still make a killer costume out of it--just put a black mask over your face and go as a burglar.

Mime

Or, if you have a black and white striped shirt and a black suspender dress, you can go as a mime. Whether or not you paint your face is up to you!

Ursula

Will you have to add some ornaments--mainly, tentacles and drag makeup--to this costume? Sure! But, if you have a long black dress hanging in your closet, this is a pretty awesome costume to try.
