7 Blowjob Facts That’ll Surprise You

It’s safe to say that blowjobs are by far one of the most popular sex acts around. Even moreso than handjobs, it always seems like blowjobs are like the “gateway drug” into the world of sex. It’s hard to even get through most porn videos without some long and boring blowjob scene, right? Before I was sexually active, the idea of giving someone a blowjob was pretty damn unappealing. Slobbering on someone’s penis and trying not to gag until they emit some icky tasting substance into your mouth? Wow, sounds super enjoyable (not). But–without getting into too many details–now that I actually know what a blowjob is like, I understand the popularity. It’s intimate, pleasurable (to the receiver), and it can be sort of rewarding if you’re invested in pleasing your partner. You just have to make sure that your partner respects your boundaries and doesn’t think they can pull your hair.

Still, whether you enjoy giving someone a blowjob or not, it goes without saying that blowjobs will always be a sex staple for anyone getting hot and heavy with someone with a penis. But before you have your next encounter with a penis, you might be interested in knowing these seven surprising blowjob facts. Some are funny, some are depressing AF, but all of them are worth knowing before that next blowjob.

Young Teens Are Way More Interested Oral Than Intercourse

So many teen movies make it look like guys desperate to lose their v-cards, and while that might very well ring true, they might actually be more invested in getting blowjobs than anything else. A study of ninth grade boys revealed that more teen boys are having oral sex than intercourse and intended to receive oral sex again within six months of the initial survey than intercourse. Why? They perceive oral sex to be a lot more safe and low risk than intercourse regarding pregnancy and STDs. Of course, oral sex doesn't prevent you from having an STD, but given the lack of pregnancy risk and the casual way our culture treats blowjobs, it's not surprising that teens aren't as worried about risks when it comes to oral sex. Also, the boys surveyed were more likely to pursue oral sex when they perceived that their peers were having it. Yup, it's all a competition for them, I guess.

There's A Massive Oral Sex Gap Among Men And Women

Okay, so this is the least surprising fact on the list: A lot more women are performing oral sex than receiving, which means that a lot more men are getting blowjobs than women are getting eaten out. Wow, quelle surprise. Canadian college students were surveyed about oral sex in recent hookups, and the results were...depressing: While 63 percent of men said they received oral sex during their last hookup, only 44 percent of women could concur. That's a nearly 20 percent point difference, guys. WTF?

Men Enjoy Cunnilingus More Than Women Enjoy Blowjobs

So, we've established that men perform oral sex on women way less than women perform oral sex on men, right? Right. Well, here's a fact that might surprise you: Contrary to the popular belief that men are grossed out by eating women out, a study shows that men actually enjoy cunnilingus a hell of a lot more than women enjoy blowjobs. Seriously, 52 percent of men described giving oral sex as "very pleasurable" versus a mere 28 percent of women. Shocked TBH.

Blowjobs Can Make Or Break A Relationship

In a study conducted by a website that specializes in cheating (barf, I know), 85 percent of men said that oral sex is mandatory and needs to occur on a regular basis. About 72 percent of women concur. Essential, a lack of oral sex in a relationship might just lead people astray and tempt them to look elsewhere for satisfaction. But don't assume your BF is going to cheat on you just because you don't give him a blowjob every day. Yikes. Communication is key, so talk to your partner openly and honestly about the role that oral sex plays in your relationship.

Blowjobs Might Be A Leading Cause Of Oral Cancer Eventually, Toppling Smoking

At the moment, you're most likely to get oral cancer from smoking cigarettes. But some health professionals worry that as the number of smokers declines, unprotected oral sex with people who have HPV might become the leading cause of oral cancer. Currently, HPV is responsible for 25 percent of mouth cancers and 35 percent of throat cancers globally. It's also worth noting that it's possible to carry HPV without knowing it, regardless of your sex. Get tested, guys, seriously.

Blowjobs Might Be Spreading A Strain Of Gonorrhea That Is Resistant To Antibiotics

Want to get freaked out? There's a strain of gonorrhea going around that is developing a resistance to antibiotics. In other words, it's incurable. The World Health Organization is blaming the virus' spread on unprotected oral sex. You might want to think twice before giving someone a blowjob if they haven't been tested yet.

Around 71 Percent Of People Never Use Condoms During Oral Sex

I'm going to be honest: Given the fact that condoms (and dental dams for folks with vaginas) seem to be so unpopular during oral sex--despite the fact that forgoing a condom increases risk of getting/spreading an STD--I'm surprised that even 29 percent of people bother to. I mean, I thought that only 10 percent of people would bother with that. The more you know!
