Can Masturbating Kill Your Sex Drive?

Here at Gurl, we obviously love talking about masturbating.  We are always talking about the pros of masturbating, different postions to spice things up in your solo sex life, and even the proven benefits of getting it on on your own. So basically, everyone should try it – if they want to, of course. It makes you feel good and it’s a great way to get to explore your body. That said, there are are still a lot of misconceptions that go along with female masturbation. One common fear among young women is how masturbating can affect their sex life. More specifically, if masturbating can ruin someone’s sex life.

There are a lot of masturbation myths out there (many of them stem from the idea that girls don’t masturbate, which is a sexist way of thinking, but not something we need to unpack right now!), and one of them is that masturbating too much can kill your sex drive and make you not want to have sex with another person anymore. So, is it true? The short answer is… uh, no. Masturbating won’t ruin your sex drive and dry you up down there. In fact, it will probably make your sex life better. Masturbating and sex isn’t a “one or the other” type of deal. When you masturbate, your body releases chemicals like dopamine and oxytocin, both of which help get you in ~the mood~ for sex. So, if you want to masturbate before getting it on, you should! It will make the actual sex more fun!

You might be wondering, okay, but does that apply to someone who masturbates all the time? Like, every day? Will that make you less likely to have sex? Again, not so much. Your brain will actually get so used to this release of chemicals that happens when you orgasm that it won’t really matter how you are getting that stimulation. Your body will get addicted to the feeling and it will feel good whether you’re having sex or masturbating. See?! Best of both worlds.

Oh, and besides the fact that masturbating usually increases your sex drive, it also makes things more exciting for you. Having sexy times on your own can  also help you discover what you like.  If you masturbate a lot, you’ll get to know your body and what goes on down there. You’ll learn what feels great and what doesn’t feel so good. You’ll figure out what spot always gets you to orgasm and what’s more tricky for you. You can take these tips into the bedroom when you’re hooking up with a partner, and use them to make the most of the experience. When you are getting it on, you will know exactly what works for your body (and what doesn’t), and you can teach your bae. It’s a lot easier this way, trust us!

So, in conclusion, if you find that you aren’t horny when you are trying to get it on with your bae, don’t assume that it’s because you masturbated. You might have some sort of hormone imbalance that will interfere with your sex life. You might just be tired and cranky. Maybe you’re just not in the mood! There are so many different reasons you don’t feel like doing it, but one reason is most likely not the fact that you masturbate sometimes.
