At this point, I think it is safe to say we are are all familiar with the cultural scourge that is the makeup tutorial video. These videos have become ubiquitous in recent years, facilitated by a few notable YouTube beauty gurus turned bonafide celebs, plus the auto-play format available on most social media platforms that makes it easy to stare for a prolonged period of time at a women applying lipstick to her eyelids without really knowing why.
Of course, if you have common sense, you will know that most of the videos you see might not be the best thing to try IRL. Still, to be fair, it is easy to forget one’s normal standards of common sense and morality when confronted with a well-edited video presented by a beautiful person who, based on appearances, really seems to know what they’re doing as far as beauty is concerned. But, if there is anything to be learned from such beauty videos, it is that appearances can be deceiving! So, to be safe (perhaps literally), check out these beauty trends that are actually pretty dangerous:
1. Glitter in face masks:
Glitter has been popping up in a bunch of beauty products recently. It’s understandable for, like, makeup, but less so for skincare–first of all, glitter is not FDA-approved, so its safety can’t be guaranteed. Also, no offense, but what is the point of glitter in a mask? It’s not going to improve your skin. It’s not going to give you a permanent glow. It’s just going to get into your eyes.
2. Using hot sauce as lip plumper:

Will it make your lips plumper? Sure, because they’ll be so irritated that they swell up. Please skip this one.
3. Using wasabi as pimple cream:
?HOW TO GET RID OF WHITEHEADS IN LESS THAN 2 MINUTES WITHOUT POPPING THEM! ?- no more acne, no big monstrous pimples, no clusters of pimples – just smooth pimple free skin! ——great for men too who get whiteheads from shaving facial hair? All you need is WASABI!? ✅Apply the wasabi with a qtip to a cleansed face ‼️USE AS A SPOT TREATMENT ONLY to your whiteheads and leave on for NO MORE THAN 2 MINS – DO NOT apply this on your entire face. Spicy ingredients like wasabi, cayenne, chilli pepper etc ARE NOT meant for your entire face as a mask. They can cause unnecessary pain if you use it all over, and can actually do more harm than good. I mean would you eat a spoon full of spice or just add a tiny bit for some flavour? Same concept applies when you use it topically. Theyre ONLY good for spot treatments, just like your “regular” acne spot treatments. ‼️ ✅Wipe off with a clean qtip ✅WASH your face after – no cleanser ?the whitehead will be GONE and it will NOT turn into a big annoying pimple, and it wont spread into more pimples (which whiteheads can tend to do) ?*this does STING. It gets red. thats normal. its doing its job. If you have extremely sensitive skin then wipe off after 20-30 seconds* ?IM NOT CRAZY! IT WORKS! HERES WHY: -For my sushi lovers.. do you know why wasabi is served with sushi? aside from being delicious? Its because its an ANTIBACTERIAL (for the raw fish) and also a pimples worst enemy!! -JAM packed with VITAMIN C, CALCIUM, POTASSIUM, and PHYTOCHEMICALS that can help strengthen antioxidants in your body -it stimulates and increases circulation in your skin, so when you apply it topically it helps instantly heal whiteheads and generate clear, soft, smooth, healthy skin. -promotes oxygenation of cell tissues = healthy tissues = healthy beautiful skin ?PS. i use this as a lip plumper too – check out the demo video on my feed <3 ? ??TAG A FRIEND WHO COULD USE THIS and dont forget to LIKE THIS VIDEO TO HELP A SIS OUT FAM! ??? Disclaimer: As with any skin care regimen, always do a test patch first to see if your skin is allergic to any of the ingredients.
Speaking of skin irritants, uh, wasabi is one. Plus, most dermatologists agree that wasabi has no anti-inflammatory properties, so, not only will it irritate your skin, it won’t really do anything you want it to do.
4. Using chicken nuggets as a foundation sponge:
Great if you want to break out all over your face! Otherwise, you should probably pass on this one.
5. Using deodorant as primer:
Deodorant as PRIMER?!?!? -It’s summertime and I SWEAT? ! I decided to try deodorant as a primer to stop the sweating through my foundation. I used TOMS because it isn’t harmful to your skin. Allegedly, this helps stop up sweat from your face and prevents makeup from running. I cannot speak to how well this works, as I have never tried it! What I will say, however, is that you need to sweat. Like, you really need to. Plus, if you stop up the sweat glands on your face, you can look forward to some breakouts.
6. Using Monistat as primer:

This one isn’t dangerous, per se, but if you’re inclined to breakouts, it’s probably not the best thing to try.
7. Using dental floss to remove blackheads:
This hack might help remove your blackheads, but it could also scrape off excess skin, which will leave you with flaky, bloody scabs on your nose. Not fun!
8. Contouring your cold sores:
This will just irritate them, making them harder to heal in the long run. (Also, please don’t use your makeup sponge on infected skin.)
9. Using glue as a pore strip:
Guys. Come on. No.
10. Burning off split ends:
This is something that you DEFINITELY should never do on your own, and, TBH, I wouldn’t go for in a salon either. You’re burning your hair! That’s not good.
11. Using whipped cream on split ends:
Not as bad as burning your hair! But, uh, still not a great way to deal with split ends. (Just get a cut. You’ll be okay.)
12. Putting sugar on your eyelids:
This looks like an eye infection, and, fittingly enough, it will probably give you an eye infection too. Stay away!
