8 Teen Sex Comedies That Are Actually Worth Watching

Is it safe to say that they don’t make teen sex comedies like they used to? I mean, to be honest there’s less teen movies these days in general. High school flicks have been a rarity since blockbusters like 2010’s Easy A, and the teen movies that have come out have either been limited release indie flicks like The Perks of Being a Wallflower or massive trilogies like The Hunger Games. But basic teen movies about teenagers dealing with the weirdness of sex, puberty, and relationships that were so popular in the ’90s and 2000s (You know, movies like American Pie) are MIA. Where are they? We need some levity, especially these days. What better way than by laughing at (usually fellow) teenagers with no game?

Look, I’m not going to act as if the average teen sex comedy is a masterpiece; many of the older ones are riddled with outdated sexist and homophobic jokes and seem to be made more for horny teen boys than anyone else. But there are some gems, some diamonds in the rough that are absolutely worth watching if you need to laugh at someone else’s sexual misfortune instead of your own for once. Check out these eight teen sex comedies that you should actually watch.

Easy A

Unlike a lot of other teen sex comedies that are male centric and oozing with sexism, Easy A turns the genre on its head with a strong, anti-slut shaming message and a sex-positive slant. After lying to a friend about losing her virginity to an older guy, our protagonist, Olive, is at the center of a nasty rumor, essentially declaring her slut of the universe. But instead of crumbling under the scrutiny, Olive trolls everyone at her school by embracing her new image. It's arguably one of the best teen movies of the '10s, and you're missing out if you haven't seen it yet.

Superbad

Superbad is the ultimate Millennial teen movie, next to Mean Girls. Starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, Superbad is about two high school seniors who are about to graduate, but want to make sure they lose their virginity first. Of course, that ends up being a lot harder than they think it'll be. While this sounds like a cliche, recycled plot, Superbad is surprisingly charming for a "white-boys-trying-to-lose-their-v-cards" movie. It's a modern teen classic, definitely worth watching.

The To-Do List

Set in the '90s, The To-Do List is tells the story of a straight-A, valedictorian nerd who decides that she doesn't want to be sexually clueless when she starts college in the fall. So she constructs a sexy to-do list of all of the things she wants to get out of the way, from masturbation, to oral sex, to intercourse. It's wacky and over the top, and being a sexpert by your freshman year of college is seriously overrated. But it's refreshing to watch a movie about a girl trying to reach her sexual milestones for once.

American Pie

If you haven't watched American Pie yet...I don't know, man, it's such a teen classic that watching it should be a rite of passage. This romp about a group of teen boys who are trying to lose their virginity by prom night is known for how shamelessly outrageous it is. And if you like gross out comedy, this one is for you: There is literally a scene in which a character has sex with a freshly baked pie. Yes, really. I mean...watch that scene at the very least; YouTube is free!

Not Another Teen Movie

I say this all the time but, guys, Not Another Teen Movie doesn't get the love it deserves! It's basically a movie lampooning every ridiculous '80s and '90s teen movie plot and cliche, especially She's All That. It's way more clever than people give it credit for, mocking everything from the whole nerdy-girl-takes-off-her-glasses-and-becomes-hot trope to the token black sidekick stock character. Plus, it stars Chris Evans as a total doofy jock. It's worth seeing for that ridiculous performance alone.

Wet Hot American Summer

This satirical take on teen sex comedies follows the love lives of young camp counselors on the last day of summer camp in 1981. Literally, it's a movie about awkward, thirsty people at camp, and despite being a box office bomb and getting mediocre reviews when it was released in 2001, it is a cult classic today. It has even spawned two Netflix spinoffs! Come for the weird humor, stay for killer cast, including Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, and permanent babe Paul Rudd.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High

If you want to watch a ridiculous, R-rated movie about sex-obsessed teens with a vintage twist, check out 1982's Fast Times At Ridgemont High. It pretty much set the tone in a lot of ways for the teen comedy genre for decades to come. It has some pretty gratuitous nudity that might make you roll your eyes, but it's still worth watching for pop culture's sake. Plus, fun fact: Its director, Amy Heckerling, also directed Clueless.

Animal House

Animal House is an American classic, and it's goofy AF. This movie about a delinquent frat house and the college dean who is out to get them has been considered so important in pop culture that the Library of Congress deemed it culturally significant for preservation. Yes, this movie about a bunch of loser frat bros and their awful frat parties is important enough for the government to protect, so why not watch it to at least say you've watched it? You'll probably laugh a little too.
