7 Scary Vagina Conditions You Need To Know About

If you have a vagina, I’m sure you know about all of the, uh, weird things that can happen to it. The discharge, the smells, the massive amounts of blood that pours out of it every month. It’s a lot to handle, but I’m sure you’re pretty good at it at this point. If weird things happen, you know to call your doctor and get checked out. But, sometimes there are some weird conditions that you might not know about. I’m not talking about the occasional ingrown hair or an STD. I’m talking about the lesser-known vaginal conditions that not many vagina-having people can experience.

I don’t want to freak you out, obviously, but there are certain conditions that you should know about. They’re actually a lot more common than you would think, even though they aren’t really talked about. You might have them without even realizing it, and if you do experience some of these things, it’s a good idea to get checked out by heading to the gyno. Even if you don’t have these conditions, it’s a good idea to know what COULD happen down there, so that you’re prepared if you ever do have something funky going on down there. Check out these vaginal conditions that you really need to know about.

Depressed Vagina

Yes, your vagina can be depressed. It's called "Vulvodynia" and doctors aren't 100 percent certain of what causes it. It can make your vagina burn, itch or even feel like it's being "stabbed." The reason why it's called a "depressed" vagina is because certain antidepressants help out patients who experience this condition.

Trichomoniasis

This condition is actually an STD that can cause yellowy discharge and irritation down there caused by a tiny organism called trichomonas vaginalis that can be spread through sexual contact. If you have these symptoms, be sure to head to a doctor, and tell your sexual partner. The good news is that it IS curable! Yay, science!

Vulvar Varicosity

Vaginismus

This condition is actually pretty common, and pretty painful.  If anything going into your vagina ( a penis, a dildo, even a tampon) causes you pain, you might have this condition that causes your vaginal muscles to spasm. It sucks, but can be rooted to anxiety and stress, so you should definitely talk to a doctor or therapist to help you out.

Cervicitis

Not many people know a lot about their cervix, but it's a really important part of your uterus that opens into the vagina. Cervicitis is a condition that is caused by a cervical inflammation. This can lead to vaginal bleeding or discharge. This can be caused by an STI, which means you should often get tested and be vocal about your vaginal issues with your doctor.

Pudendal Neuralgia

This is a lesser-known issue that involves the pudendal nerve, which is what helps a person experience pleasure. Instead of pleasure, though, this condition causes discomfort and pain. It can be treated with therapy, but you should be sure to get to the doctor right away if you have this.

Vaginal Atrophy

If you have low estrogen levels, you might begin dealing with vaginal atrophy, which can cause vaginal dryness and itchiness, along with pain during sex. It can be treated by getting your estrogen levels back to a normal state, so you should talk to your doctor if you're unsure.
