Can Girls Have Wet Dreams?

Hey Heather,

This is a weird question, but I was just wondering if it’s possible for girls to have wet dreams like guys do? Sometimes I have dreams that turn me on, and when I wake up, it feels like something happened down there. But someone told me only guys have wet dreams. Is there something wrong with me?

When we’re younger and in a proper sex education class, we all learn that boys can have wet dreams (technically known as “nocturnal emissions”). This means that, while they’re sleeping, their penises become erect and they end up ejaculating. We’re taught this because it’s super common for guys to have wet dreams during puberty, thanks to the increase in testosterone and the increase of blood flow to the penis while they sleep. It will happen to most dudes, if not all of them, at some point during their puberty years. We aren’t taught anything about girls having wet dreams, which can lead us to believe girls can’t have them – and that can lead us to feel like, if something does go on down there, something is wrong.

But fear not: it is possible for girls to have wet dreams, it’s just that it’s not exactly the same as a dude’s wet dream. When someone with a vagina has a wet dream, they don’t ejaculate the same way someone with a penis does, which may be why we aren’t taught about this in sex ed (or it’s because most sex ed doesn’t cover nearly enough information about the vagina, but that’s a discussion for another day!).

If a female has a wet dream, instead of ejaculating, she’ll just get very wet and lubricated. Similar to dudes, this tends to happen because of an increased blood flow to the genital area during the REM cycle of sleep. This increased blood flow makes it easier to become aroused, so if you end up having a ~sexy~ dream during that time, you could become really lubricated – and sometimes, yes, you can even have an orgasm. While you’re sleeping! Not exactly a bad thing.

One study from the ’80s found that a little over 30 percent of women surveyed had experienced a nocturnal orgasm in their life, but it’s also possible to have a wet dream without an actual orgasm. So, while that number might seem low, it’s probably not accurately reflecting what’s going on. While it is still more common for boys to have nocturnal emissions, it’s perfectly normal for girls to have wet dreams as well. Oh, and it’s also normal if you’ve never experienced anything like this. It doesn’t happen to everyone, or you might not experience it until later in life. Whether you’re getting wet, having an orgasm, or feeling nothing special down there at all, you’re fine. Don’t stress!

Good luck!
Heather
