The most important thing about back to school (besides the weirdly satisfying act of shopping for notebooks) is your first day outfit. Just think about it: these people haven’t seen you in almost three months, and you want to make a good impression, right? Of course. You’re tan AF and have just gotten a cute new haircut. You are ready to take on the world! You don’t want to be wearing the same things you wore last year, since that would be SUPER embarrassing, right? Kidding, but you do want to look good and trendy, and your first day of school outfit is the best opportunity to do that.
It can be really hard to find something that you want to wear on the first day, since there is a lot of pressure to look good. You don’t want to show up wearing something unflattering or boring. But you also don’t want to go too over-the-top. It can be hard to find a balance. The good news is that there are some easy tips that can make this outfit search a little bit better. Yes, it will be hard to get back into “school mode” but you can ease your way in by shopping for some cute clothes and finding the PERFECT first day outfit. Check out some pointers below, and be sure to get those back-to-school shopping deals ASAP.
Keep Your School Dress Code In MindSome schools won't let you wear leggings or super short shorts to school (which is ridiculous, but whatever) and you don't want to get sent home on your first day. Be sure to research the school dress code before going back to school shopping, so you don't end up buying 10 pairs of leggings that you can't actually wear. Image Source: iStock
Get Clothes That Fit WellHere is what used to mess me up when going back to school: I used to buy clothes that were a little too small, and buy them thinking that I would lose weight and fit into them. That's not the best idea. It's not that losing weight is a bad thing, you just don't want to rely on it when you are clothes shopping, you really want to wear what will fit you! Image Source: iStock
Stock Up On LayersI know that it's hot right now, but it will get chilly pretty soon, and your school might be lucky enough to have AC (mine didn't!) so be sure to bring a sweater your first day, just in case. You never know! Image Source: iStock
Stick To BasicsYou don't want to show up on the first day wearing 98 different trends and patterns. Keep it simple! It will make it much easier for you to mix and match outfits throughout the year. A little black dress can go a long way! Dress it up with accessories, or down with a jean jacket. You've got this! Image Source: iStock
Keep ReceiptsDo you ever find something you LOVE in the store, but then once you get home it looks like a literal trash bag on you? I'll let you in on a little secret: stores purposefully have bad mirrors and dark lighting in their dressing rooms so that you don't REALLY see what you look like when you are trying things on. Be mindful of that and be sure to keep your receipts so you can return anything that doesn't fit the way it does in the store! Image Source: iStock
Stay ComfortableI know that certain styles are super in right now, but they might not be the most comfortable things to wear. Yes, leather pants are super '90s and making a ~comeback~ this year, but that doesn't mean EVERYONE should wear them. Stick to what makes you feel good and comfortable. Image Source: iStock
Don't Forget ShoesShoes are a very important, since they really do complete the outfit. You don't want to pick out a super cute look and then have to wear plain old flip flops on the first day. Don't forget to wear comfy but cute shoes! Image Source: iStock
And Accessories!Accessories make a huge difference to your look. They will add some extra personality to your outfit, which is a good way to help you stand out on your first day. Add a cute pair of earrings or a necklace to really amp up your look. Image Source: iStock
