If you’re going to college in the fall, you probably already know that you only have a little bit more time before you officially move in. In fact, you’ve probably already been assigned a dorm room, and a roommate, and perhaps even a specific time at which you are supposed to move in. And, if you are the type to be as organized as you possibly can, you’ve probably already checked out the floor plan or blueprint of your dorm. If so, let me just say this–I’m sorry!
I don’t want to scare you, but if you haven’t gotten a chance to look at your dorm room layout yet, the main thing that you have to know is that it’s probably going to be very, very small. This isn’t the worst thing in the world–you’re only going to be there for about two semesters, after all–but it can make getting organized (and staying organized) a bit of a headache. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do to make sure your dorm room stays as clean as possible. So, check out these easy ways to make sure that your dorm room stays clean all year round:
1. Clean out your closet before you pack for college:
The key to not feeling like you’re drowning in your clothes when you get to college? Clean out your closet before you go. This will make packing significantly easier and ensure that you don’t bring things that will only take up space throughout the year.
2. Keep a cleaning schedule:
If you make cleaning part of your regular routine, it won’t feel like as much of a chore when you do it–and, of course, if it’s a habit, your room will pretty muich always be clean.
3. Keep track of everything you need to do in your planner:
This will help ensure that everything you need to get done really will get done.
4. Make your bed every day:
It might feel like a hassle, but this is actually a great way to make your room feel neater, even if it isn’t technically immaculate.
5. Organize your desk:
Your desk will become a jumbled-up mess real quick if you aren’t careful. Set up an organizing system ASAP when you first move in, then make an effort to stick with it.
6. And your dresser:
Same goes with your dresser drawers (particularly your underwear drawer). If you set up dividers ahead of time, it’ll make it easier to keep your clothes organized, which, in turn, will help you prolong your time between laundry day.
7. Use hanger extensions:
This will help save a ton of space in your closet, which will allow you to keep more stuff in there, which will make it seem neater (even if it’s technically pretty full).
8. Use your wall space:
You know, instead of your floorspace. This makes things easier to find and makes the room appear as though it’s less cluttered.
9. Make your garbage cans pristine:
Sometimes it’s the little things, you know? This garbage can hack helps keep the plastic bag in place, which will help trash from sliding out and making your room messier than it has to be.
10. Keep your desk clear of clutter:
Do you like to keep your pens and pencils on your desk’s surface? If so, try making these (super cute) boxes to store your writing accessories so they’re accessible but won’t take up too much space on your desk.
11. Use under-bed storage:
Using the storage space under your bed is key. Get some plastic bins, loft your bed, and get as much stuff under there as you (reasonably) can.
12. Keep cleaning supplies handy:
Nothing too fancy–just some disinfecting wipes, spray, and some paper towels. This way, you’ll feel more inclined to actually wipe things down than you would if they were stowed away out of sight.
