We all have that problematic fave that we obsessed over when we were younger, right? My personal love was Spike from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I was obsessed with him and his British accent. You can relate, I’m sure. Then I realized that he was an abusive monster, which really ruined the show for me. But, a lot of the time, you don’t realize that your crush is actually a mess, both in real life and on TV. We all tend to glamorize people when we are crushing on them, even if they are actually a little rude or even mean to us. This is especially true when it comes to fictional characters – we tend to look past all of their bad qualities and pretend that they are better than they actually are. I mean, these people aren’t real, so they must be good… right? Not always.
I know that crushes on fictional characters don’t seem like a huge deal, but hear me out: if you have a crush on someone fictional, you might look for similar qualities in a real person, which can be tricky and dangerous. If you normalize their crappy behavior in a show, that means you will normalize crappy behavior IRL. It really does matter! If you used to find yourself crushing on a ton of TV characters, check out this list to see if they were actually pretty terrible people.
Chuck Bass From Gossip GirlEverybody remembers that time he tried to rape Jenny, right? Why was he a heartthrob?! WHY? I remember seeing those "I want someone to treat me the way Chuck treats Blair" memes circulating Tumblr in 2009 but LBR, you do NOT want to be treated like that. Image Source: Gossip Girl
Dan From Gossip GirlOkay, this one was out of left field, but he really was being sketchy AF the entire series, before it was revealed that he was actually Gossip Girl. I'm sorry but WTF? He played the "innocent boy" card when he was actually manipulative and a liar for the entire series. Image Source: Gossip Girl
Nathan Scott From One Tree HillHonestly...this dude was terrible. He got better when he got older, but he was violent and super possessive in the beginning, which is not cool. He would often cheat on his former GF Peyton, and had a very "my dad is rich I can do whatever I want" attitude. I really don't know why my friends and I crushed on him so hard...but we did. Dawson From Dawson's CreekI understand that Dawson was such a central focus of this show but he was so whiny, guys, it was unreal. He had to make everything about him always, and was super possessive of Joey. But he had good hair, so we all loved him. Image Source: Dawson's Creek
Jess From Gilmore GirlsUnfortunately, everybody's dream bad boy was just...bad. He didn't know how to use words and just up and left when things got a little weird. He was also prone to fights (what is it with teen boys and throwing punches?) and had a bit of an attitude problem. But, yeah, he was cute. Image Source: Gilmore Girls
Ezra from Pretty Little LiarsI, too, admit to having a crush on Ezra Fitz at some point in my teens, but come one...he was Aria's TEACHER. She was a teenager and he was definitely in his late 20's. Yikes. When are we going to stop with the student/teacher relationships? I'm looking at you, Riverdale. Sure, they ended up together in the end, but they should have never gotten together in the first place. Image Source: Pretty Little Liars
Ryan Atwood From The OCHe was so ~dreamy~ but also loved to fight people. If he were someone you knew IRL, you would have to stay away from him. Yes he was from a "broken home" but he had some serious issues to work out, which made him a fun crush to watch from afar. Image Source: The OC
