7 Weird Things That Semen Can Do To Women (Aside From Make Us Pregnant)

Sometimes it seems like semen can do one thing, and one thing only: come out of a man’s penis and make it’s way up the birth canal to make a woman pregnant. To be fair, this is a big job that is probably the most important thing in the world, but still – don’t you ever wonder if semen can do anything else? It can, actually, and it’s definitely worth knowing about, especially if you’re having unprotected sex and semen is making its way inside of you.

This is because most of us probably think that the only real risk from having semen inside of you is getting pregnant, and actually, it can do other annoying things. These things aren’t quite as life-changing, but they can be frustrating to deal with. It’s not all bad, though – semen has some positive side effects as well (I’m sure you’ve heard about the semen facial that unfortunately became popular recently). There are myths about semen that aren’t really true, too. Like, when I was in high school, a manipulatively clever dude told me, while I was on a diet, that porn stars are thin because they consume a lot of semen, which is high in protein and aids in weight loss. You’ll be happy to know that I didn’t believe him (I did until my best friend told me otherwise, but she caught me in time so that his plan didn’t work, so whatever it’s fine). Anyway, let’s find out what else semen can actually do to women, okay?

It Can Make Your Vagina Smell

If you're letting your partner ejaculate inside of you, and you've also noticed a smell down there (with no other symptoms), it's probably not a coincidence. Semen can actually make your vag smell bad. The alkalinity of semen can mess with the vagina's pH levels, which can change the way it smells right away. This is especially true if a little semen remains inside of the vagina. The scent shouldn't last long and should disappear after a shower, so if it doesn't, make sure nothing else is going on down there.

Semen Can Cause Your Period To Come Earlier

Semen inside of you can end up softening your cervix, which could lead to your period coming early. Interesting! However, it's also worth noting that some doctors believe that sex itself can trigger an early period, so - this is a little up in the air.

It Can Cause A Bacterial Infection

If you've noticed that you seem to get irritated down there after having a guy ejaculate inside of you, his semen could be giving you a bacterial infection. This is especially common when you've had sex with a new partner or a fairly new partner. Semen can mess with your pH levels, which can in turn end up giving you some sort of bacterial infection. Sometimes you have to adjust to the guy's junk before it stops happening, and sometimes it will always happen with the same guy, no matter how many times you have sex. If that's the case, use a condom - it could help.

It Can Get Rid Of Depression

Sex itself isn't the only thing that can make you feel happy. According to a fairly recent study, semen can lower symptoms of depression. The research compared two groups of women - one using condoms, one not using condoms - and the women not using condoms reported lower symptoms of depression. Of course, there are a lot of other things to take into consideration there, but it's interesting!

Semen Can Cause An Allergic Reaction

You may have heard that you can be allergic to sperm, and it's true - you can be! Semen can cause allergies that include inflammation and redness. But a lot of researchers say this kind of allergy is super, super rare, so it's hard to keep a handle on it. On top of that, these symptoms can be easy to dismiss as part of an infection.

It Makes You Sleepy

If you feel sleepy after having sex or giving oral sex, it might be the semen. Male ejaculate contains melatonin, a natural sleep aid that can make you feel drowsy whether you're swallowing it or having a guy ejaculate in your vaginal area. Hey, it's a good reason to cuddle after a hookup!

It Lowers Blood Pressure

This might not be something you think about a lot, but it's still interesting - semen might lower blood pressure. A study found that women who gave men oral sex and then swallowed had a lower risk of preeclampsia, which is dangerously high blood pressure. So, uh, stay healthy with semen?
