As someone with oily skin–and I mean wakes-up-with-a-shiny-face level oily–I know that summer can be absolutely hellish when it comes to keeping my skin as oil-free as possible. It’s bad enough to sweat up a storm, but if you wear makeup on top of that? Ha, it’s a wrap. Good luck hoping your go-to foundation doesn’t feel gross and melt off midway through the day. And even if you don’t wear much, if any, makeup, looking like an oil slick can be really annoying. Yeah, I know, the dewy look is coming back in style full force, but when your natural dewy look is just a mixture of sweat, oil, and massive pores…issa no.
When all is said and done, I think that oily folks need to be real with themselves about this cold hard truth: There is no one product out there that is going to keep your oily skin entirely at bay. It’s just not possible, no matter how much setting spray you use. But there are some products out there that at the very least make your oily skin more manageable and less greasy looking. So check out these beauty products that are absolute lifesavers for oily skin, from drugstore classics to high-end staples.
1. CLINIQUE Pore Refining Solutions Charcoal Mask
Treat yourself to a mask a few time a week! You’ll love this Clinique charcoal mask, which helps absorb excess sebum (oils) in your skin without turning your face into an absolute desert.
2. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Oil Free
You’re going to want to skip the foundation more often than not in hot weather, so why not get a tinted moisturizer, preferably one that doesn’t suck. This Laura Mercier one is a favorite among many and comes in a wide range of colors with great coverage and some SPF protection as well. Better yet, it comes in an oil-free version!
3. Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets
You really can’t mess with a classic, and if there’s any classics on this list, it’s this one. These oil absorbing blotting sheets aren’t fancy, but they’re cheap, portable, and get the job done.
4. Shiseido Pureness Oil-Control Blotting Paper
If you’ve graduated from the Clean and Clear brand blotting sheets, try these Shiseido ones instead. They’re pricier, but OMG, people absolutely go crazy over them. Each sheet contains some invisible powder, which helps keep you oil free for far longer than most blotting papers.
5. Boscia Charcoal Jelly Ball Cleanser
If you want a new cleanser for your summery skin, try this one by Boscia. The charcoal is great for oily folks and it’s also great if you’re acne prone as well. Nobody wants a breakout in the summertime.
6. Stridex Pads, Maximum Strength
If you’re oily and acne prone, you’re going to love to wipe your face down with these pads. They contain two percent salicylic acid, which is great for unclogging pores. Plus, it’ll just leave your skin feeling really clean.
7. Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++
I know, you love that moisturizer you copped a few months ago, but it’s not winter anymore! You’ll want a lighter moisturizer for the rest of the season, and this one will serve you well. It’s mattifying, the texture isn’t heavy, and it has some SPF in it too.
8. Pixi Glow Tonic
This toner is going to feel amazing after washing your skin at the end of the day. It’ll help get deep into more and leave your skin with a smooth, clean surface.
9. Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer
Primers are tricky for us oily folks, but this is one that even the greasiest among us swear by. If you really want to make sure your makeup can stand up against summer heat, use this Smashbox primer. It absorbs into the skin without feeling heavy and it is effective for hours.
10. Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray
Like I said in the intro, there won’t be a single product to keep your face from getting oily all day long, so you need to manage your expectations. Nevertheless, this setting spray is a favorite among many oily skinned people because it really helps prevent midday makeup meltdown.
11. BECCA Ever-Matte Shine Proof Foundation
If you do insist on wearing a foundation, I recommend this matte foundation from Becca. It’s the only one I wear that I absolutely swear by because it doesn’t make me look like I’m melting at the end of the day! It’s matte without looking dry either, so you won’t have to worry about it clinging to dry patches if you have combination skin.
12. Mario Badescu Facial Spray With Aloe, Herbs And Rosewater
Sometimes, we just want our face to feel a little more refreshed in the midst of a summer heat wave. Keeping this lil’ guy in your bag when you’re on the go will be your saving grace. It’s hydrating, smells great, and won’t mess up your makeup.
