Police in Fairfax, Virginia have recovered the body of a 17-year-old Muslim girl, who was reported missing early Sunday morning. She has been identified as Nabra Hassanen of Reston, Virginia, and her death has sparked shock, anger, sadness, and fear among Northern Virginia’s tight knit Muslim community and others worldwide.
According to accounts by Nabra’s friends, Nabra and four or five other girls finished up an early breakfast at IHOP early Sunday morning and were on their way to Mosque when they were approached by an angry motorist. He jumped out of his car swinging a baseball bat, causing the girls to disperse and run to the mosque. When the girls arrived, all were accounted for except for Nabra.
The police were called immediately began an extensive search of Fairfax, Virginia and the outlying area. Nabra was eventually found in a pond later that afternoon. Investigators believe she was assaulted before she was killed.
Investigators have arrested and charged 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres with Nabra’s murder. While the police tweeted that Nabra’s murder isn’t being investigated as a hate crime, that seems to give little comfort for young Muslim women, many of whom have taken to Twitter to share their disgust.

This tragedy, coupled with the murders committed by a white nationalist after harassing two young Muslim women and an overall uptick in Islamophobia inspired attacks, it’s understandable for Muslim women of all ages to be on edge.
