J.K. Rowling Just Revealed Another HP Fact You Didn’t Know

We all know that the Harry Potter series ended in 2007 (that’s 10 years ago this summer, but who is really counting), yet that hasn’t stopped J.K. Rowling from releasing tiny bits of info about the series every couple of months. Sometimes, it’s big stuff we actually wanted to know, and other times it’s a bunch of useless information that nobody asked for, but we still appreciate anyway. It looks like she isn’t stopping anytime soon – over the weekend, the authore revealed some more info about Harry Potter – this time about the Potter family tree. She published a story about The Potter Family on Pottermore, which gave us some insight to where Harry and his name came from. It might not seem like monumental news, but we learned something pretty cool: there is another Harry Potter.

I know that sounds weird, but listen up. Did you ever wonder why Harry’s parents gave him that name? Well, he was actually named after Henry Potter, who was James Potter’s grandfather. Henry went by the name Harry, so we could assume that’s what James and Lily had in mind when they were naming their only son. This could also be a reference to the real-life Prince Harry, whose real name is Henry.

We also learned some more info about James Potter’s extended family. His father was named Fleamont Potter (weird name, but whatever) and married a young woman named Euphemia, who would eventually be Harry’s grandmother. The two had given up on trying to have children, until Euphemia discovered that she was pregnant with a boy, who they would name James. Unfortunately, Fleamont and Euphemia didn’t live long enough to meet Harry, as they died of Dragon Pox, which was supposedly a common thing in the wizarding community. When they died, James was given the Invisibility Cloak, which was supposed to be passed down to the eldest child. This means that Harry got the Invisibility Cloak from his father, who got it from his father, who got it from HIS father, also named Harry. Are you following?

Basically, we learned a lot more about James Potter’s background, which was previously unknown. Sure, we know a little bit about Lily Evan’s family and her sister, but now we know a little more about the Potter family (and their weird names). I know it might seem silly that we are still learning new things about the Harry Potter word when the series ended so long ago. But honestly? I think it’s pretty cool.
