Of all the things you are going to do this summer, you might not be thinking about reading books. I mean, I know I never really did. I would get my summer reading list and then forget that it existed for the next three months until the day before school started again. I WAS really into rereading Harry Potter, because that was something I enjoyed, and not something I was being told to do. You may or may not feel the same way, but I’m guessing that your school-assigned reading is not something you are looking forward too. And that’s why I need to give you a list of new books coming out this summer that you’ll actually WANT to read.
I’m not saying you will hate any books that were assigned by your teachers, but they can get a little…repetitive. This summer, you want to read a cool and unique book that will ~change your life~ or keep you on the edge of your seat, right? I know, I know, Shakespeare is important, but try reading some of these books this summer when you head to the beach. You won’t regret it!
Into The Water by Paula HawkinsIf you like suspense, this book is for you. It's from the author of the bestselling novel Girl on the Train. It follows a teen girl who has to live with her aunt after her mom dies under mysterious circumstances. Sounds super spooky, but also sounds like a great read. The book came out last month, so you can buy it now.
Saints and Misfits by S.K. AliThis book follows and Indian-American Muslim teen as she tries to figure out what the heck is going on with her crush, while confronting issues with her religion. Sounds heavy, but also super important. This book is out now, and you can buy it here.
The Answers by Catherine LaceyThis novel follows a young woman who is struggling to make ends meet, which is relatable AF. In order to pay her medical bills, she enrolls in a new program called "The Girlfriend Project" where she is hired to play an "emotional girlfriend" for a young actor, and then becomes invested in his life. The book is out now, and you can buy it here.
The Idea Of You by Robinne LeeThis book seems...incredible. When a mom takes her teen daughter to see her favorite boy band, she falls in love with one of the band members. I have SO many questions, but I think we all NEED to read this book. It just came out on June 13th, and you can order it here. Maybe don't let your mom read it, though.
The Child by Fiona BartonThis story is dark, but seems like a total edge of your seat novel. When a man discovers a skeleton in a neighborhood, journalist Kate Waters begins to investigate, and soon learns that the story is a lot darker than she thought. Yikes. Maybe don't read this one when you are home alone at night? You can preorder it here.
Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman by Anne Helen PetersenIf you're looking for a nonfiction book to dive into this summer, you should check out this book that analyzes what it's like to be an opinionated young woman in modern society. It uses celebs like Lena Dunham and Nicki Minaj as examples and, honestly, every girl should read this book. It comes out on June 20th, and you can preorder it here.
The Lying Game by Ruth WareYou're PROBABLY still going to be sad about Pretty Little Liars ending this summer, but The Lying Game should get your mind off of it. Not to be confused with the popular book series of the same name, this book follows a group of young women who were all friends as teens, then drifted apart as they grew up, only to get forced back together in order to solve a "sinister secret." AKA it's PLL for adults. I'm so down for this. This one comes out July 25th, and you can preorder it here.
