This Is Going To Be THE Song Of Summer This Year

I’m going to be straight with you guys: where I live, in New York City, it pretty much still feels like winter. It’s rainy, dreary, and altogether not super conducive to the Riff-Raff-esque summertime mood I am accustomed to feeling at this time of year. But this doesn’t mean that my search for the song of summer (an exhausting, mostly fruitless endeavor that, much like the lottery, we all must participate in every year not so much out of desire, but rather out of compulsion) isn’t in full swing. I am sure you are searching for one, too, so today, I would like to submit a new option for your consideration–a song called “Thunder Thighs” by Miss Eaves.

The video, which dropped yesterday, is the perfect showcase for a body positive pop song you never knew you needed. It features women with body types that don’t typically get featured in music videos, which is refreshing in an era in which “thickness” is praised in pop culture, but only if it’s the right kind–you know, like, a big butt, big boobs, wide hips, and a tiny, toned, nipped-in waist. Plus, Miss Eaves directed the video herself and shot it in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, where she lives, which frees the video of the male gaze component that tends feel inescapable in most music videos (or, really, anything in pop culture). This also helps some lines of the song that might usually make you roll your eyes (like “thick thighs, sundress, I’m feeling good” and “chub rub the day is just heating up”) actually seem genuine and authentic, not like you’re being pandered to so that some marketing executive can make a profit off of you.

I’m not the only blogger at a feminist-leaning site who’s obsessed with this song, by the way. Jezebel actually premiered the video, and other publications like Seventeen, Women’s Health, and Mashable are talking about it, too. And, honestly? The hype is warranted. Really and truly, this song is a banger. So, give “Despacito” and “I’m The One” a rest for now (Justin Bieber has sung more than enough catchy pop hooks in his lifetime, and will likely sing some more before his time on Earth is over), and give “Thunder Thighs” a few plays. Who knows? Maybe it’ll help summer get here faster.
