If you are a human being, odds are good that you’ve heard about the new Wonder Woman movie that broke records last week and became the best opening day and weekend for a female director EVER, making $100.5 million over the weekend. I’m sure a lot of men are super happy about this! Whether or not you’ve seen it, you’ve most definitely heard about it, and you will probably keep hearing about it, since the movie is pretty freakin’ important. And now, we have learned some new details about the upcoming Wonder Woman sequel that will (probably) also break some records.
So, nothing ~official~ has been announced yet, but director Patty Jenkins has hinted at what kind of sequel she wants to make. According to Entertainment Weekly, Patty wants the next movie to take place in the USA. Good, since we could really use some powerful female figures here in America. Patty told EW, “The story will take place in the U.S., which I think is right. She’s Wonder Woman. She’s coming to America. It’s time.” YEP. It really is time, you guys. The sequel is also expected to take place in the present day, as opposed to the post-World War I era that the first movie took place in. Wonder Woman is immortal, after all, so this gives us a ton of options when it comes to her timeline.
Patty added, “You want to do a movie like this because you believe in it.” And right now, believing in powerful women is super important. She then said, “I made Wonder Woman. Now I want to make Wonder Woman 2. It’s a beautiful story to tell, an important time to tell it and with people that I love.” I’m sure I speak for a lot of women when I say that having a strong lady kicking ass on screen is pretty awesome right now. In a time where women’s rights are being taken away every day, we, as women, have to keep fighting and doing our best to stick together.
We don’t know when the WW sequel will be made, but odds are it won’t be for a few years. I mean, the Wonder Woman movie has been in the works since 1996, which means we might have to wait quite a bit until the next one comes out. All we know is that Gal Gadot is already committed to a sequel, and director Patty Jenkins is super into it.
Sure, it might seem stupid to be so heavily invested in a movie, but it’s not. Wonder Woman has always been a symbol of power and strength that young girls have been able to look up to, and if creating a sequel will continue to help girls realize how strong they are, then there definitely should be a sequel. And making it take place in present-day America could be exactly what the we need right now. Not only women, but men, too! I know you might be thinking that there are more “important” things than movies right now, but even movies get people talking about important issues. So, yes, you can be excited about a Wonder Women sequel, since it shows that women are NOT backing down.
What do you hope to see in the sequel? Tell us in the comments!
