Everything You Need To Know About The New Snapchat Update

Right on the heels of a pretty big Instagram update, Snapcat has an exciting new update of it’s own, and it’s definitely worth hearing about. Don’t sleep on the app just yet – this new feature proves that Snapchat might have enough to offer that it won’t lose completely to Instagram stories.

I have to admit that it took a long time for me to truly like Snapchat. I didn’t “get it” for a while, and it seemed like a weird app. The concept of disappearing pictures seemed a little bit sketchy to me. But then Snapchat introduced filters and it quickly became the best social media outlet out there. I mean, the dog filter? Life-changing! The geotags? Important! I love Snapchat, and now there are even more ways to share your Snaps with friends: custom stories that you and your friends can all contribute to.

What do I mean? It’s kind of like a group video/photo album. Confused? Okay, let’s say you’re having a squad trip and you want everyone to know how much fun you’re having – but not just YOUR fun, everyone’s fun. You can create a custom story, and each of your friends who are with you can add to that story. This way, you can see the whole trip from everybody’s perspective, which is pretty cool! It’s perfect for birthday parties or special events (like prom!) where you’ll want to see what was going on the entire time. It’s actually really awesome if you don’t want to miss out on the full experience.

Here’s how it works: you can create the story, name it what you like, then allow people to add based on your friends, or based on location, like so:

So, depending on where you are and what you’re doing, you can decide who can contribute to the story, and who can view it. Let’s say you and your BFFs are all hanging, but you miss your friend on the other side of the world – she can still see it if you allow her to. You can even make up to three custom stories at once, if you’re feelin ~Snapchat Crazy~.  It works the same way as other stories, though, and disappears after 24 hours, or earlier if the creator deletes it. In the past, you have been able to collaborate on local stories in your town or city, but now you can finally make them yourself, and customize who sees them.

Overall, this small update is actually a pretty good idea and a fun way to keep people connected. It’s also a good counter-update to Instagram’s update (wonder if that was planned… hmmm). Creating your own story puts all of the focus on you, and kind of makes your trip or hangout sesh feel almost like a reality show. It’s a creative way to use the social media app. Snapchat might seem silly to some people, but preserving your memories and good times with friends is fun and important in the long run. You’re going to want to remember these things, I promise.
