President Donald Trump made history today, May 22, by becoming the first sitting United States President to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem – and the Internet can’t stop talking about it.
The Western Wall is an incredibly sacred and important site for Jewish prayer, called “the most significant site in the world for the Jewish people.” It’s the last remnant of the Temple and a spot where many Jewish people come to pray and leave notes for God. President Trump’s visit there was, to many, a huge step forward in his campaign promise to make the United States a better friend to Israel. As stated, Trump is now the first sitting US president to visit the site, something other presidents, like President Barack Obama, were criticized for not doing (although it is worth noting that Obama visited the Western Wall as a sitting senator, while George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush visited either as private citizens or candidates).
Trump went to the site with First lady Melania Trump, his daughter Ivanka Trump, and his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner (who is Jewish), as well as Western Wall Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich. Despite requests from Israeli officials, Trump did not go with any Israeli government officials. He donned a yarmulke, then placed his right hand on the wall to pray (maybe?), and placed a folded up note in the crack of the wall, as is custom.
The visit was especially notable, not only because of ongoing tension between the United States and Israel, but also because of the controversy surrounding it. The United States doesn’t recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and believes it’s status should be decided in a final status peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians. Trump’s visit to the wall was controversial because it is on the West Bank, which is not US policy. According to NBC, “the historic visit is part of Trump’s efforts to highlight ‘the need for unity among three of the world’s great religions’ on his first foreign trip, senior administration officials said.”
So, yes, this was a very serious visit to a very serious and significant Jewish site – but that didn’t stop the Internet, mainly Twitter, from taking the opportunity to poke fun at Trump.
Some users imagined what he must have been thinking while standing at this important wall:
This is easily my favorite tweet of the week:
"Who paid for you?" he whispered. But the old wall keeps her secrets. pic.twitter.com/xplQhXvzQ3

You can see him saying this, no?
Trump on the Western Wall: "This is the ugliest wall I've ever seen. Believe me, my wall will be way more tremendous."

Or maybe this:
@CBSNews He's testing it and thinking "I like this wall – this is what I want"

Others speculated on what could have possibly been written in Trump’s note:
It’s a great hiding spot?
The note Trump placed in the Western Wall was definitely a copy of that election map pic.twitter.com/C6Z9kf4mgr

Something Trump would definitely want to leave behind:
Way harsh, Tai:
This is… good.

Some made sexual innuendos:
I feel itchy.

And then there were those that could only focus on one thing: the fact that Melania Trump very clearly swatted Trump’s hand away when he tried to grab onto hers:
Well that's embarrassing pic.twitter.com/jZviscfD14
