6 Ways You Can Get Pregnant, But Probably Won’t

At Gurl, we strive to keep it real with you. We’re not interested in sugar coating and we’re not interested in scaring the crap out of you either, especially when it comes to sex. We’d rather make sure you know the good, the bad, and the ugly, the silver linings and the worst case scenarios before you make any sexual decisions, because that’s just…practical. While we’ll always preach the gospel of safe sex, we know that accidents happen. Sure, we could go on and on about how you’re irresponsible and putting your life on the line if you forget to take your birth control pill one day and have unprotected sex. But shaming you isn’t helpful, and neither is making you freak out and panic purchase Plan B.

We’re constantly receiving messages from readers who want to know if it’s possible to become pregnant if they do this, or that, etc. Some of the concerns are legit, others are so unbelievable that we can’t help but chuckle a little bit, but at the end of the day, the only way we can help curve misinformation and ease freak outs is by being as real and honest with you guys as possible. So without further ado, check out this list of six things you think can make you pregnant, but probably won’t. Get ready for a few surprises.

Missing A Birth Control Pill

So, you missed taking your pill. Worse, you missed your pill and you had unprotected sex, or the condom broke, etc. Can you become pregnant? Yes. Is it likely? Not very, especially if you immediately double up or take your pill as soon as you can. If you go more than a couple of days without taking your pill after having unprotected sex, however, you're putting yourself at a higher risk of pregnancy

The Pull-Out Method

Sex ed in school taught me that the pull-out method--having unprotected sex and withdrawing before ejaculation--was always unreliable and should never be trusted. Well, it turns out that done correctly, the pull out method has a 96 percent success rate. The keyword here is correctly, however, which a lot of people don't really know how to do. Frankly, people are a lot worse at knowing when they're about to ejaculate than they might think, and pre-cum still contains sperm, so...this might be a little too stressful to bother with. However, will you automatically become pregnant via successful use of the pull-out method? No. As I said, if done correctly the chances are in your favor that you won't become pregnant.

Period Sex

I cringe whenever I hear about people having unprotected period sex, because sperm can live inside of your body for two, three, and so many as five days. So sperm can technically make it's way up through all your uterine whatsits and bam, pregnant; this risk goes up if you have unprotected sex toward the end of your period. But is it likely that you'll become pregnant? Thankfully, your chances are pretty low since you're least fertile during menstruation. Still, why risk it if you avoid it, you know?

Ejaculation Landing Around The Vagina

We get this question all the time at Gurl, and we totally understand your fear. But you should breathe a little easier knowing that your chance of pregnancy is pretty low unless you physically force the ejaculation inside your vaginal canal. Even then, your chances of pregnancy are lower than if your partner actually ejaculated inside of you.

Anal Sex

Okay, let's just be clear on this: You cannot become pregnant from having anal sex, period. To be blunt, there is no direct path from your butthole to your ovaries. There isn't isn't. However, that chance increases if ejaculate from your parter dribbles down out of your butt (sorry) and to your vaginal opening. Is it likely? No, you'd really have to go out of your way to make sure the semen enters the vaginal canal. So your best bet is to make sure your partner wears a condom (hey, don't forget about STDs) and if they don't, clean yourself up ASAP.

Girls

Blow Jobs

Don't laugh! We get this question all the time, and it always comes from the right place: Can you get pregnant by giving someone a blow job and swallowing the semen? In short, no. The semen lands in your stomach, not your uterus. So your chances of becoming pregnant aren't just unlikely, they're impossible. Literally, unless you kept your partner's semen in your mouth, spit it out into a turkey baster, and shoved it up your vagina, you have nothing to worry about.
