If you’re a person with a vagina, you are probably familiar with the amount of vaginal products that are on the market. Sure, some of them are good and helpful and totally safe. Others are… not. You might not know this since companies are trying to sell you things without actually thinking about your health. I don’t mean to sound all preachy, but you really need to be careful when it comes to vaginal products. If someone tells you that you should be douching, unless they are a doctor, you really shouldn’t be. If someone suggests that you get your vagina steamed, please, for the sake of your vag, do NOT do it.
It can be scary to be a person with a vagina since there are so many things that people claim can help freshen/clean/fix our “dirty” vaginas. Newsflash: your vagina actually cleans itself and can take care of itself. A lot of “popular” vagina rituals are not good for you and should really be avoided. I know it can be hard to keep track of all of the things that you need to avoid, so here is a handy list of popular things that should never, EVER go near your vagina, even if others swear by them. Be safe!
Anything MintEven though you might think that a mint-scented body wash will make you feel ~fresh~ do NOT use it on your vag, like this woman. It really will hurt. And yet, people still decide to do it, and warn others about the risks. Maybe you think it will feel good, or that you want your vag to taste good but, trust me, it will NOT do those things, it will cause pain and irritation. Image Source: iStock
Scented PadsScented things, even scented pads, should not be used. Oftentimes, things with fragrances can irritate your vagina and be super dangerous. They can contain certain chemicals that might cause infection or irritation. Be sure to use unscented pads and shaving creams to keep your vag safe! Image Source: iStock
Douching ProductsDespite the fact that doctors are VERY much against douching, these vaginal products still exist and you might be tempted to use them. Please don't! Certain chemicals, like those found in douching products sold at drug stores, are super harmful to your vagina and can cause infection. There are much safer ways to clean your vaigna, like by just using water! Image Source: iStock
Sugary FoodYes, using food during sex might be ~sexy~ but it can also be risky. Certain foods, like whipped cream, have a lot of sugar in them that should not be getting near your vagina. Too much sugar can mess with your pH balance and increase your risk of a yeast infection. Yes, you can eat whipped cream off of each other if you're into that, but keep it out of your vag. SteamThis is another "vagina fad" that is really bad for you. I'm not talking about steam from your shower, since that's fine. But, there are actually places that offer Vaginal Steam Therapy that might seem like a luxurious treatment, but it is actually terrible for your vagina. It can mess with your natural hormones and introduce terrible bacteria down there. Just don't do it. Image Source: iStock
Bleach/DyeThere was a pink pube trend a little while back that was pretty popular, but you should not bleach down there. You might think it looks cool, but you should keep harsh chemicals- like bleach and hair dye- away from vagina. It if gets anywhere in you, it can cause burns and pain. Image Source: iStock
PiercingsGenital piercings might be edgy and cool, but they can lead to all sorts of issues, like infections. You could even be allergic to the metal which sounds...horrible. Plus, it will hurt quite a bit. I don't want to tell you NOT to get this piercing, but you need to know about the risks beforehand. Image Source: iStock
Unwashed Sex ToysThis might be obvious, but I need to say it, okay? You should not be putting a vibrator you keep under your bed near your vag. You want to make sure to keep it in a clean spot and never, ever, use it if it's dirty or dusty. You don't want that bacteria going inside you! Image Source: iStock
