As the summer begins, we all start bathing suit shopping, and we all must make a choice–to shave, or not to shave? Obviously, whatever you are comfortable with, you should do. You should never, ever, shave anywhere you don’t want to, just because you THINK you should. Your body is your body, and nobody can tell you what to do. That being said, you might want to shave down there for summer, which is totally cool and fine. But, it can be a little tricky if you have never done it, or haven’t shaved in a long time. Even if you have, there could be some things you are doing wrong when shaving your vagina.
First things first, you’re not ACTUALLY shaving your vagina, since that is technically the part that’s inside of you. When you’re shaving your vagina, you should be shaving on the outside, where your pubic hair is–not inside, which would be…painful. Now that you know what you are actually shaving, you need to know how to do it safely and efficiently. There are a lot of mistakes you can make when it comes to shaving your public hair, so be sure to read these tips before you do anything, to ensure you are doing it right and well!
Trim FirstIf your hair is very long, attacking it with a razor won't be very effective. You will want to get a clean pair of scissors and trim it down before actually shaving. It really will make a difference and help the process be less painful and not as time consuming. Image Source: iStock
Use Warm WaterI know you probably want to shower in cool water this summer, but hold off on that: the warm water will help open up your pores, which will make it easier to remove your hair. You also want to be sure to wait at least 10 minutes after you get in shower before you shave, so the steam can help open up your pores as well. Image Source: iStock
Exfoliate FirstExfoliating will help soften your skin and get it ready to be shaved. You only need a little bit (no more than a dime-sized amount) and should use it after rinsing yourself with warm water. Image Source: iStock
Use A New RazorUSE A NEW RAZOR! Don't you dare use an older razor, or your family member's razor. It's really important to be safe and sanitary, and to do that you want a brand new razor. New razors are just better in general, since they won't be super dull and do a sucky job. Image Source: iStock
Go For Unscented Shaving CreamYou want to be sure to use unscented shaving cream, since any fragrance or dyes really shouldn't spend too much time down there. If you can, find a shaving cream for sensitive skin, since that area is pretty sensitive, and you don't want to put any harsh chemicals down there. Image Source: iStock
Shave The Direction The Hair GrowsThis is important: shave in the direction that the hair grows. It will hurt less and be more effective. It's pretty easy: just take a look at what way your pubic hair is growing, then shave that way. Image Source: iStock
Pat The Area DryWhen you're done shaving, be sure to pat the area dry. You also want to moisturize a little bit so that your skin stays soft and smooth for the longest amount of time. Again, try to moisturize with something for sensitive skin, and without any dyes or fragrances. It will be must safer on your vag! Image Source: iStock
Wear Cotton UnderwearOkay, after you shave, you have two options: cotton underwear, or no underwear at all. If you can, try to air out your vagina for a little bit so you can avoid any ingrown hairs. It will be really sensitive down there, and you might also be prone to infections if you cover it with underwear and sweat. If you can't do that, be sure to use cotton underwear that can help you breathe down there! Image Source: iStock
