When it comes to makeup, I do know what works for me and my face, I know what makeup I like, and the type I will always stay away from, but it took me a little while to get here. I have older sisters, but they never really wore makeup growing up, so I never really had anyone to learn from. So, it took me quite a long time to learn how to put on makeup and buy the right products for me. So if you’re trying to get more into makeup: I 100 percent feel your pain and frustration, and I want to help.
If you don’t really know much about makeup, walking into a store like Ulta or Sephora can be the most anxiety-inducing experience of your life. What do all of the brushes do? What’s the difference between liquid eyeliner and pencil eyeliner? WTF is concealer? These were all thoughts I totally had as a teen, so I don’t blame you if you feel this way. If you don’t, then you’re already doing better that I was at 16. When I first started buying makeup, I would buy literally hundreds of dollars worth of eyeshadow. I never wore eyeshadow. Like, ever. I just thought it was the trendy thing to do, so I bought it. Big mistake! But enough about me, let’s get to YOU. Maybe you really want to start building your makeup collection, you just don’t know what you need. I feel that. So, I decided to come up with some basic beauty essentials that every girl should own if she wants to expand her makeup collection. Check them out, then let me know if they worked for you!
ConcealerConcealer is your best friend. It can cover your pimples and dark eye circles. Just pick the shade that's right for you, then apply it to your face to cover any blemishes. If beauty blenders freak you out (how do you USE THEM?!) then try this cute little concealer that actually had a built in tiny blender that will help cover your face of all those tiny imperfections. I mean, you're perfect either way, this little product will just help. You can get this TrèStiQue Conceal, Cover and Correct Crayon from Sephora for $26.
Eyeliner BrushIf you, like me, can't figure out how the f*** to put on liquid eyeliner, try using an eyeliner brush. It's a little easier, and a lot less messy, to use a brush and some cream eyeliner. If you're REALLY afraid of eyeliner, just use eyeshadow, which can be a little easier and less messy. The brush is already angled, so you don't need to have a super steady hand, which is a plus. You can get this from Ulta for $1.99.
Gel EyelinerI mentioned it above, but I figured you needed a little more info: gel eyeliner is a little easier than the pen (IMO) and this is a good one to use with the eyeliner brush! You can grab this one Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner for $26 from Sephora.
LipstickYou need this in your life. Even if you don't wear anything else, wearing any type lipstick is a tiny little thing that makes you look super put together no matter what. I remember thinking that red lipstick made me look scary and intimidating, but it actually makes you look super mature and chic. If you don't know how to put on any other type of makeup, don't worry, just add a little bit of lipstick. Try this GloMinerals Matte Crayon for $18.
MascaraMaking your lashes look long and luscious is a super easy way to get a glamorous look without having to try so hard. You really don't need to wear fake lashes or get lash extensions, especially if you are just starting out with makeup. Try out a bunch of mascara to see which one makes your eyes POP, then keep that one in your makeup bag. You can get this Makeup Forever mascara for $24.
Eyebrow BrushUnfortunately, I learned about the power of eyebrows a little too late in the game. Getting an eyebrow brush is a great way to tame your eyebrows, and give them a fuller look. Brush out your brows, then fill them in. You won't believe how drastically it changes your look and pulls together your face. You can get this GloMinerals micro browliner for $20
Tinted LipbalmYou NEED to keep your lips hydrated, but you should also give them a little color, if you want. Try a tinted lip balm that will prevent your lips from getting chapped, but also give you a nice, tinted look. You can get this Benefit tinted lip balm for $18.
MoisturizerYes, you need moisturizer. I didn't know this for a VERY long time, but you do. Depending on your skin type, there are a ton of different types of products you might need for that. I won't get into skincare routine, since that's a whole other topic, but you can check out some tips here. You can also pick up this Tree Hut skincare moisturizer from Ulta for $14.99
Makeup WipesThe one thing more important than the makeup itself is taking it off. You NEED to remember to wash your face every single night to take off your makeup, or else it will clog your pores and cause nasty zits. Try something that isn't too harsh. Get some Neutrogena wipes from Ulta for $12.49
