When you really think about it, prom is a scary concept. It’s bunch of teens, at the end of the school year, all stuck in a room looking fancy AF. It’s a lot. I’m not saying it’s bad, but any time there is a group of more than six teens in a room, it can get a little out of hand. Not to be dramatic, as I was once a teen myself, but it can be daunting, especially if you’re not used to that kind of socialization. If you’re an introvert, you are definitely not used to a situation like prom, which can make the whole event seem scary and intimidating. But, you shouldn’t let your introverted personality stop you from going to prom. It is, after all, a rite of passage.
So now that you’ve got your dress and your date and the Big Day is coming, how the F do you handle the fact that you’re going to be surrounded by hundreds of people all night? It’s okay, deep breaths. I’ve been there, and it’s not fun. You want to be able to enjoy your night, but you also don’t want to overdo it, or feel uncomfortable at all. If you are a little nervous for prom, take a look at these easy prom tips for introverts. They will help, trust me.
Keep Your Phone ChargedMy phone is my best friend when I am in social situations that make me feel uncomfortable, which is why I always bring a charger in order to make sure my phone stays fully charged. Also, it's good to have your phone ready so you can call someone if you're feeling bad or want to be picked up. Image Source: Pretty Little Liars
Have a "Buddy"I don't just mean your date, but your BFF who will take a break with you if you need one. Proms and dances can be over-stimulating, so you might need to take breaks throughout, and if you don't want to go alone, make sure you have a friend who you can go to if you're feeling uncomfortable. Know Where The Bathrooms AreI am an extremely anxious person, so I always like to know where the bathrooms are in any situation I'm in. Not because I have to throw up from stress (although that DOES happen, but whatever) but because it's a good idea to find a quiet place that you will be able to get to get a few minutes of peace and quiet. Don't Give Into Peer PressureI know that your prom won't allow alcohol, but a lot of the time, people end up sneaking it in. You really don't want to do anything that will make impair your judgment or make you feel bad. It's a good idea to stay away from drinking because 1) it is illegal and 2)it won't help you at all. Realize That Everyone Is Probably A Little Anxious TooProm night is a big night, and if you're feeling a little uncomfortable, you can take solace in the fact that everyone else is probably at least a little anxious too. Take deep breaths, you're going to be fine, I promise! Image Source: Degrassi
Leave Early If You NeedYou don't HAVE to stay the whole time. Stick around for a little bit, feel it out, then decide if you want to stay or not. All of that interaction can be exhausting, and if you only stay for an hour, that's okay. Just make sure to tell your date beforehand. Image Source: Pretty In Pink
Don't Overthink ItI know it's hard, but prom is supposed to be fun. If you're not having fun, it won't be worth it. If you want to skip it, skip it! It's a fun rite of passage, but it won't be the end of the world if you don't go. Hang with some other friends who don't want to go either and watch Netflix and order pizza. It's much more lowkey. DanceAt most proms, there is dancing. Dancing will actually release endorphins that can help calm you down and enjoy the night. You might want to try it! And, don't worry, you're probably not as bad a dancer as you think. Probably. Image Source: Glee
