As someone who spends a lot of time inside, it’s easy for me to say that my favorite summer activity is going to the movies, like, all the time. Sure, the sun is nice and warm, but I am prone to sunburns and never really liked going to the beach or being hot and and sticky outside. In a way, summer is just another excuse to wear a cute dress for about 15 minutes, go outside to take a ~Summer 2017!~ Instagram pic, then head inside the the closest air conditioned room. And, sometimes, especially when I was little, that would be the movie theater, since we wouldn’t have A/C, or it would be broken.
I spent a lot of my summers at the movie theater watching every and any movie I could in order to escape the heat and live vicariously through the lives of onscreen characters. So, you can imagine how high my standards are when it comes to summer movies. There is something so satisfying about heading to the movies with your BFFs and sneaking junk food in so that you don’t have to pay extra for those theater princes (seriously, they are ridiculous). Some of my fondest high school memories are sitting in the movie theater parking lot with my best friends until 2 am. Maybe that means I didn’t lead a very exciting life, but you have to admit that going to the movies is pretty cool. If you’re not much a movie goer, don’t worry, here are all the best summer blockbusters coming out this year that you will love.
Guardians Of The Galaxy 2If you don't like superhero movies, don't worry: this franchise is fun and lacks all of the annoying "macho" superhero movie tropes. It follows a group of misfits as they band together to, you know, guard the galaxy and such. Even if the movie doesn't entertain you, the soundtrack is pretty awesome and the tiny tree named "Groot" is SO CUTE. This movie comes out May 5th.
Everything, EverythingIn case you've been waiting for a Fault In Our Stars/ A Walk To Remember-type movie, this is it. It follows a teen named Maddie who has a rare condition that basically makes her allergic to everything. Of course, she meets a boy, and they fall in love, despite the fact that she can't really go outside. I'm crying already, and I haven't even seen it yet. You can catch this one in theaters on May 19th.
Wonder WomanWe asked for more female superheroes and, luckily, we are getting some. Wonder Woman is a princess/warrior/badass who is finally getting her own movie this summer. The film takes place during World War 1, which is when Wonder Woman AKA Diana, is still learning how to be a "warrior." You can see this movie in theaters on June 2nd.
BaywatchYes, this movie looks silly and yes, it is based on that old '80s TV show, but this one has Zac Efron in it, so you KNOW it's going to be good (maybe). It follows a group of overly-attractive lifeguards who get stuck in the middle of a criminal investigation. You can see this movie on May 25th.
47 Meters DownShark movies are lowkey the only movies that still freak me out to this day, so I'm pretty excited for this movie, which stars Mandy Moore and Claire Holt as divers who get trapped with a ton of sharks underwater and struggle to stay alive. Am I terrified? Yes. Is it going to make me skip the beach for the rest of my life? Yes. Am I excited. YEP. You can watch this movie in theaters on June 16th.
DunkirkHonestly, I am not entirely interested in this movie, but it features Harry Styles' acting debut so, you know, it's pretty historic. Not only that, but it's actually based on an actual battle that took place during World War 2. It will be heavy, but it's a Christopher Nolan film, so you know it will be action packed and super dramatic. You can watch this movie on July 21st.
Rough NightTBH, if you're sick of all the Hangover movies that dominated the 2010s, this movie seems to be a better version of that. It follows a group of old college friends who go on vacation for a bachelorette party and, uh...accidentally kill someone. I know, it sounds freaky, but it looks really funny and has an awesome cast including Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon and Ilana Glazer. You can watch it in theaters on June 16th
Amityville: The AwakeningIf you feel like you've been hearing about this movie for years, you have been. This movie began production in 2012 and was supposed to come out in 2014, then 2015, then 2016, and it looks like it is (finally) being released this summer. But who really knows? It stars Bella Thorne as a young girl who moves with her mom and siblings into-you guessed it!- the famous Amityville house were numerous murders and supposed paranormal activity took place in the 20th century. If you want to get spooked, check out this movie in theaters June 30th.
