Summer is almost here. It might not feel like that right now, to you–given that you’re probably in the depths of final exams and projects and can only focus on the following day, not the next week and certainly not the next month—but, I promise, once you finish that one Psych paper and your final Algebra test, you’ll be fully in the throes of summer, wondering how the heck you even got there. So, if you have just a smidge of free time, it might be worthwhile to start thinking about what you might want to do once summer gets started.
Me? I always like getting haircuts right at the start of summer – it feels super satisfying to shear off whatever split ends and breakage I managed to accumulate over the winter – but I often find that I don’t quite know what to get. Summer is hot, which calls for an exposed neck, but it’s also humid, which (for me and my super-thick Semitic hair), at least, means that short bobs might not totally work. Fortunately, there are a ton of cool, trendy haircuts on the horizon this summer for pretty much any hair type – so, if you’re looking to get a cut too, check out some haircuts you’ll see everywhere this year:
1. Long Layers
Long layers with messy waves aren’t, like, revolutionary for this particular summer–they existed last summer, and the summer before that, and will continue existing in summers for years to come–but it’s a timeless summer look for a reason. So, if you usually blow out your hair, trade it for a curling iron and some texturizing spray. This way, your hair will be able to withstand the heat and humidity of the summer easily.
2. Eye-Length Bangs
If you’re into bangs, maybe skip your next trim–obviously, don’t let them grow completely over your eyes, but bangs that grow past the eyebrows have been a pretty big look for all of 2017, so you can expect to see it in the summer, too. Plus, longer bangs tend to be slightly easier to style, because they look great when the hair is pulled up, don’t need as much styling and product as shorter bangs do, and you can always sweep them to the side if you really don’t want to deal with ’em.
3. The “Modern Rachel”
Been bingeing Friends lately? If so, you should try out a modern version of Rachel’s signature ‘do–it’s a little longer, which means that it’s more durable and can be mussed up a little bit more. Just ask your stylist for long, blunt layers, and you’ll be all set.
4. A Shag
Feeling bold? Get a shag haircut. Really. These cuts were all over the runway for Spring/Summer 2017, and have a certain je ne sais quoi about them, no? It’s a look that takes well to sweat, since it should have some texture anyway, and will free up your neck so you feel comfortable in the heat.
5. Long Shag
If you don’t want to cut your hair super short, you can still totally get a shag. Just get some blunt layers and bangs, and you’ll be good to go.
6. Natural Hair With Bangs
If you have natural hair, you can totally pull off bangs, and the summer is the perfect time to do it–just ask your stylist to give you a mix of long and short pieces in the bangs so the hair falls nicely.
7. Bob With Center Part
If you want to look chic AF, chop your hair so it’s right below the chin and ask for your stylist to cut it in a way that makes center parts easy. This is a cool, trendy look that looks best when it’s slightly mussed up, so you don’t have to go too crazy with heat tools to style it. (And if you want to look really cool, go ahead and dye your hair blue, too.)
8. Lob With Layers
If you have straight hair, this is a great look–the layers help add a tousled effect to the hair without adding too much volume and heat to the neck.
9. Short Natural Hair
People freak out about going short without the help of styling tools, but honestly? You can totally do it with whatever hair you’ve got. Just add some texturizing spray and, if you want, a few twists with a curling iron. This helps get you a cool, carefree look that’s perfect for summer.
10. Short Bob With Bangs
Bangs! They can’t be beat. If you want a decidedly trendy, cool-girl look, go for a short bob (that is, chin-length or shorter). This haircut works perfectly for summer, because it doesn’t have to look super smooth and glossy, as you might usually expect for a bob. As you can see above, it totally works with thicker, textured hair.
11. Long Mermaid Hair
Don’t feel like parting with your long locks? It’s cool! Visit a salon to clear up any split ends and breakage you might have, then leave it as is. Don’t straighten it. Don’t blow dry it. Don’t do anything to it, in fact–just add some texturizing mousse to your hair and twist it.
12. Long Pixie
If you want to rock gamine, Audrey Hepburn-like vibes this summer, go for a long pixie cut. It’s super easy to style–just throw some texturizer in, tousle it, and go–and it’ll help keep you cool over the summer.
13. Shaved Head
Really don’t feel like dealing with your hair this summer? Just shave it (or go for a short buzz). It’s totally trendy, and, what’s more, it’ll ensure that you feel comfortable and cool all throughout summer–and, if you’re a swimmer, it’ll help you go faster, since there’s less resistance in the water. Win-win.
