Unfortunately, breakouts happen. What is even more unfortunate is when you don’t know WHY they happen, because then you can’t really prevent them from happening in the first place. I mean, we know the basics – if you forget to wash your makeup off one night and wake up with a zit, that is pretty much your fault. I’m sorry, but it’s true. But, if you have your skincare routine that you do every day, you stay hydrated, and yet you’re still breaking out, you might get frustrated AF when those pesky pimples show up. I don’t blame you! But would it make you feel any better if I told you that there are random things you might be doing every day that are causing you to breakout? Probably not, but I’m going to tell you anyway.
Knowing what causes your random breakouts is the first step to actually avoiding those breakouts. Some things you can’t control, like your genetics or your burning desire to have bangs (we’ll get to that later) but other things you can control, and should be paying attention to. Skin can be very sensitive and breakouts can be caused by a number of little things you would have never realized. So, check out these random and weird things you didn’t know are actually making you break out, and good luck!
Kissing A Guy With A BeardPSA: don't date guys with beards. I am (mostly) kidding, but they actually could be making you break out. If your bae has hair on their face, it can cause friction on your face when you're making out, which could increase the oil production on your face and bring out fun zits. If you must kiss someone with a beard, be sure to wash your face. Image Source: iStock
Wearing GlassesFun fact: I learned this the hard when when I recently started wearing glasses and began breaking out on my nose! The oil on your skin builds up under your frames, which can cause pimples. Be sure to properly and regularly clean your glasses to avoid this! Image Source: iStock
Being On A PlaneIf you're looking forward to posting a ~fire~ Insta on vacation, you might want to bring some concealer. The dry air in planes can cause you to break out, in addition to all of the traveling stress you probably experience (let's be real: airports are stressful AF). Make sure to cleanse and moisturize when prepping for a flight, and try to relax! Image Source: iStock
Having BangsBangs can really transform your look, but they can also bring the oil from your hair onto your forehead, which can cause your breakouts, especially in the warmer months when you are sweating a lot. Try to keep your hair out of your face as much as you can, and be sure to wash your face AND your hair regularly to avoid oil build up. Image Source: iStock
Being In The SunGood news: it's almost summer. Bad news: the sun can make you break out. The sun can dry out your skin and the UV rays can damage it, which makes your face a perfect candidate for zits. To make matters worse, a lot of acne creams contain products that make your skin even more sensitive to the sun. Moral of the story is to never go in the sun! JK, just be sure to limit your time outside this summer. Image Source: iStock
Your PillowcaseThis makes sense, but it sucks to admit. Oils and dirt from your hair and body stay on your pillow, which can end up on your face while you're snoozing. Be sure to wash your pillowcases often to avoid any unwanted pimples. Are any pimples ever wanted anyway?? Image Source: iStock
Your Makeup BrushesYou need to wash your makeup brushes, guys. When you don't, bacteria will build up in your brushes, which just means you are swiping bacteria and dirt all over your face when you apply makeup. CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES! If you are a brush cleaning newbie, check out these things you should NOT do when cleaning your brushes. Image Source: iStock
Your GenesUnfortunately, there are some things you truly can't control, and that is your biological makeup. If your parents were prone to breakouts as a teen, you probably will be too. There isn't much for you to do to avoid that, unfortunately, but keeping up your own skincare routine can help! Image Source: iStock
