If you’ve been stuck in that “I want to talk to my crush but I am the most shy person on the entire planet” zone for a while, I totally feel you. In high school, I would develop full-fledged crushes on people who I had never even spoken to. This was partially because I had zero confidence and would never speak to anyone. This was also because I tend to romanticize others, but that’s a topic for another day. I had tons of crushes who had NO idea who I was because I would only admire them from afar and never actually make moves. Well, it’s time for you to make moves on your crush, even if you have zero confidence.
I don’t want to push you to do something you don’t want to do, but, at some point, you’re going to want to communicate with your crush. Don’t worry, though, because I am going to tell you exactly how to do that. Despite what all of those teen movies make you think, you don’t need a long makeover sequence to make you the most confident person of all time (though it might help). There are some little things you can do that will help you get noticed and even impress your crush. So, if you are shy AF, follow these simple tips for being more confident with your crush!
Brush Your TeethI know that a lot of girls might feel self-conscious about their breath, especially if you and your crush have class together right after you ate a giant tuna fish sandwich for lunch. Brushing your teeth is a good way to guarantee that you will have fresh breath when talking to your crush, and that you won't have anything stuck in your teeth, because that is the WORST. It's a simple thing that will make you feel a little bit better about yourself. Image Source: iStock
Wear Your Favorite OutfitI know I said that makeover scenes are corny, but wearing an outfit you feel happy and comfortable in will actually majorly boost your confidence. Do you have a favorite pair of jeans that make your legs look amazing? Do you have a cozy t-shirt that looks cool AF but also helps you feel comfy? Wear 'em! You'll feel a lot better about yourself when you're dressed comfortably. Image Source: iStock
Talk About Something You Know Really WellOkay, so you finally feel confident enough to approach your crush. But...what do you say to them? Don't worry, I've got you. If you want to seem calm, cool, and collected, talk about something you know really well. You won't feel too tongue-tied if you are talking about your favorite thing in the world, whether it's your favorite movie, or your dog. Image Source: iStock
Ask Them About ThemselvesPeople love talking about themselves, so ask them about their life! It will take a lot of the pressure off of you, which will help you relax a little bit. Be prepared for them to ask you questions back, though! Image Source: iStock
Think About What You're Going To SayI don't know about you, but when I'm nervous or anxious, I talk a lot and jumble all of my words so much that it sounds like I'm speaking a different language. Remember to take a deep breath when talking to your crush, and think about what you're going to say before you say it. It can be easy to speak too quickly or say something weird when you're feeling nervous. Just take a few seconds to think about it so you can feel confident with your responses. You'll seem ~mysterious~ but still cool. Image Source: iStock
Mention Something You Have In CommonWhen you talk to your crush, you want them to be engaged in the conversation as well. If you have a class together, mention it. If you know that your crush LOVES watching Riverdale, mention that you love it too! They will be impressed with how much you pay attention to them...even if you just found out by stalking their Twitter. Nobody has to know. Image Source: iStock
Have Your Friends Back You UpDo you have a group of friends who make you feel like you can take on the world? Have them back you up. If you're going to a party and you know your crush will be there, make sure you and your squad are there being fierce and looking confident AF. Here is a trick my friends and I would do in high school: if my group of friends was hanging with my crush and their group of friends, my squad would always talk about how cool I was (loudly). Your girls have to have your back! It will make you seem a LOT more confident than you actually are, I promise. Image Source: iStock
Flirt Over TextIf you have negative zero percent confidence, it's okay. Texting is your best friend. You have time to think about what you're going to say, and will be able to craft perfect responses. Add cute emojis that will make you seem like you actually know what you're doing, even if you don't. Image Source: iStock
