18 Weird AF Trends That Will Be Huge In 2017

Just like every other year, 2017 will be focusing on some serious throwback trends when it comes to both fashion and beauty. 2016 was all about the ’90s, 2015 was obsessed with the ’70s – this time, things are getting a little bit more out there. 2017 is a mix of trends from the ’80s, early 2000s, and a little bit of the ’90s. And honestly? Things are going to get weird AF. Not necessarily in a bad way, just in a way that we will probably one day look back on and be like, “LOL can you believe I wore that once?”

We’re less than two months into 2017, and already it’s pretty clear that, style-wise, things have changed a lot. Gone are the chokers, crop tops, lace-up shoes, off-the-shoulder tops, and white sneakers that have been so incredibly popular the last year or so. Say hello to some new, and uh, unique trends. You might scoff at them right now, or turn your nose up at them and think, “Never!” but I think you’re lying to yourself. I did this when I noticed that lace-up shirts were back because I thought I was better than everyone, and just look at this:

WHATEVER. The point is that even if these trends seem strange right now, I bet you’re going to end up embracing at least a few of them. That’s the beauty of fashion! In the meantime, let’s stay ahead of the curve whatever. Here are some of the weirdest fashion and beauty trends that will be huge in 2017.

1. Newsboy Hats

trade your broken wings for mine?

A post shared by Bella Hadid (@bellahadid) on

I wish I could write this off as just Bella Hadid wearing newsboy caps to try and ruin my life on a personal level, but Vogue also wrote about them coming back, so I can’t. I’m… trying to be open? (I’m failing)

2. Very Long Nails

Are insanely long, claw-like nails coming back? According to a lot of beauty bloggers and people like Kim Kardashian-West (who won’t stop Snapchatting her claws), yes. I am… not thrilled. But, like, okay I guess.

3. Fishnets

If you’re not wearing fishnets under ripped jeans this year, then what are you even wearing? JK, kind of, but the trend of the moment is fishnet stockings under ripped denim, or even just fishnet stockings. This is weird, but… I like it? I’m buying a pair.

4. Underboob

I remember reading some sort of 2017 style prediction piece (I can’t remember where) and seeing that “underboob” was a trend. I laughed and thought, “that seems random,” and promptly forgot about it… and then the Grammy’s happened. Cleavage looked different because it was basically all underboob.

5. Vintage Looking Athleisure

Gigi Hadid’s collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger isn’t the only major indication that vintage-looking athleisure brands are coming back big time – models, celebs, and style bloggers have been spotted in comfy pieces from brands like Adidas, Guess, and Nike that seem more at home in the ’90s than right now. Even the fact that Tommy Hilfiger is making a comeback at all is a sign!

6. Tracksuits

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

I remember when I was in high school and consistently spent every paycheck on over-priced Juicy Couture tracksuits and tbh I do not recommend it! But tracksuits, matching ones, are coming back, and I just blame Kylie Jenner, okay?

7. Statement Graphic Tees

It’s obvious from almost any NYFW photo from the 2017 collections that statement graphic tees are back in a big way. And no, I’m not talking about those “everyone loves an Italian girl” t-shirts (FINE, I used to have one), but tees that make a big statement, like one that will get people talking. Get in on it!

8. Crocs

TBH this makes me want to scream, but Crocs are back. Even freakin’ Vogue said so.

9. Khakis

I, like, don’t understand what’s happening, but people love khaki again. I’m not opposed to this, I’m just confused.

10. Platform Shoes

Remember those giant shoes the Spice Girls used to wear? They have come back to us. I can’t say I’m not a little excited for this insanely clunky trend.

11. Phone Case Bags

According to my sources (Vogue and Glamour) phone case bags are the handbag trend of the year. They’re tiny and literally only hold your phone. I can’t say I’m a fan but, you know, what can you do?

12. Kick Flare Jeans

These cropped jeans have been making a pretty steady comeback for a few months now, and it looks like they aren’t going anywhere any time soon. They’re not capris or ankle length jeans, they’re just slightly cropped and flared at the bottom. They are fundamentally ugly but also awesome? I don’t get it but this is how I feel.

13. Shoulder Pads

If there was one ’80s trend I could have picked to NOT come back, it would be this one, but here we are. Runways for 2017 were filled with tops, blazers, and dresses featuring shoulder pads. Get ready!

14. One Shoulder Tops

Say goodbye to off-the-shoulder tops and hello to one-shoulder tops… or tops that have a cut-out in one shoulder. Maybe this will grow on me?

15. Bralette Tops

How bow dah

A post shared by Kourtney Kardashian (@kourtneykardash) on

Hi, yes, we have gone from crop tops to just bra tops. Bralette tops – essentially just a bralette worn as a “shirt” – were all over the runways. Done right, with a high-waisted bottom, this can actually look amazing, but… damn. I don’t know if I could personally show off that much of my stomach.

16. Over The Top Ruffles

Ruffles were also everywhere during Fashion Week, and while they are typically very notable, the size of these ones were. The ’80s are definitely back!

17. Bangs

A post shared by Kylie (@kyliejenner) on

Bangs literally go in and out of style every season, so I’m not surprised they’re back, but also, like, why?

18. Super Long Hair

For the last few years, wavy lobs have been ruling the hairstyle trends. If Kim Kardashian-West is any indication, long, straight locks are back. It’s not just her influence – this look is definitely popular again.

Which one of these trends do you like? Which do you hate the most? What did we forget to add? Share in the comments!
