I don’t want to downplay how important going to school is. You learn essential skills for the rest of your life that aren’t just about academics – you also learn how to be social, how to be more mature, and how to be more responsible. But, sometimes, people take being “smart” waaaay too seriously, especially in high school. Maybe you don’t like taking advanced courses, or maybe you are in the basic math instead of the upper-level math. These things are totally, 100 percent okay and nobody should ever make you feel bad about it. But let’s face it, people can be mean, and sometimes you feel crappy for not being in one of the “smarter” classes. And that can suck!
Luckily, there are some ways to seem scholarly and smart, without having to study 12 hours a day. I mean, if you want to be super ~studious~ and study that much, feel free! But you can still seem smart without actually being a mini-genius. I know it sounds weird – why would you want to fake being smart? Well, for one, you already ARE smart. You don’t need approval from anyone else and you definitely don’t need anyone to validate you. That being said, it is nice to be seen as smart, since it can help people see you as mature and important. Even if you don’t feel like you know what you’re doing, try to use these tips for seeming smart, and soon you will be “that super-smart and fun girl” everybody is talking about!
Text With Proper GrammarDo you ever get intimidated by people who text using proper grammar? It's because they are slyly showing you how smart they really are. When you say, "sup" it's not a bad thing, but you're more likely to be taken less seriously than if you were to say "What's up?" Proper grammar can really go a long way, and if you get used to it now, you will be using it your whole life, which will come in handy in college and the real world. Image Source: Gossip Girl
Try To Learn A New Word Every DayYou can even aim for learning just one a week. Before you know it, those words add up, and you've successfully added some new brand new words to your vocabulary without trying that hard! In case you didn't know, there are a LOT of words in the English language, and learning some obscure ones can make you seem well-educated and mature. Image Source: Pretty Little Liars
Write Your Name With Your Middle InitialThis is random, but actually does make you seem super important! Why do you think all of the famous people write their names with their middle initial? It used to be a sign of power and upper class, which gives the illusion that you're a well-known and well-respected person. There have been studies that prove that people will trust and listen to others when they write their name with a middle initial. It sounds strange, but just think of all of the famous people who wrote their name like that? Susan B. Anthony, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael J. Fox....just to name a few. Image Source: New Girl
Walk FastI was actually surprised by this, but it does make a little sense. A Boston University study proved that people who walk slower actually seem stupider than people who are keeping up with the pace of the crowd. I suppose it can give off the impression that you are on an important mission somewhere...even if you're just running super late for class. Image Source: Gilmore Girls
Follow News Accounts On TwitterThese days, it’s hard to go anywhere without getting involved in a political conversation about what’s going on in the world. It can seem overwhelming and even boring, but it’s actually really important to keep up with this stuff. I get it if you don't want to read a newspaper every day, or listen to the news, but scrolling through your Twitter feed will give you an idea of headlines and what's going on in the world, so that you can talk about it with people IRL. Avoid Face JewelryEven though you might love your lip piercing, it might be making you look unintelligent. According to a 2012 study, wearing facial piercings (not including your ears) make people think less highly of you, and even assume that you aren't smart. So, even if you want to keep your nose ring in, just be aware that it might negatively affect how people see you. This seems crazy because it is, if you like your face piercing, keep it in! You do you. Image Source: Lizzie McGuire
Make Eye ContactI know eye contact can be scary, but it really shows you are listening to someone, so they will think you are processing information. In a Loyola University study, researchers found that people who made eye contact with the participants were perceived as smarter and gave off an impression of intelligence. This is probably the easiest way to seem smart! Image Source: Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Dress WellI know we all want to wear sweatpants every day, but when you look more put together, people will know that you care about your appearance, and therefore take better care of yourself. When you look like you take care of your body, it gives off the impression that you also take care of your mind and education, which will make you seem super smart! Image Source: Teen Wolf
Get More SleepThe number one rule of basically anything is to get more sleep. When you are constantly yawning and struggling to keep your eyes open, you won't seem very smart or invested in learning. You need to be sure you are awake and aware of your surroundings, or you will seem like you're super ~out of it~. Image Source: The Lizzie McGuire Movie
