I will be the first to admit that TV shows are, 99 percent of the time, overly dramatic. I mean, that’s why we watch them, right? To get our fill of drama without having to stir things up IRL? That’s why I watch them, anyway. But sometimes the fact that they give us the most unrealistic expectations about what it’s actually like to be a person can be super confusing. Even though I’m old enough now to admit that none of these situations will happen to me in my actual day-to-day life, it’s still fun to point out all of the whack things that happen in TV shows that would NEVER happen in real life. More specifically, it’s fun to see how inaccurately they portray Valentine’s Day in TV shows.
Let’s be honest for a second: Valentine’s Day isn’t as big of a deal as everybody makes it out to be. TV shows have special Valentine’s Day episodes that give you the expectation that your bae is supposed to make this grand romantic gesture and spend hundreds of dollars on you. That…doesn’t really happen. And that’s okay! Valentine’s Day isn’t a huge deal, and there is all of this pressure to make it the best day ever. In reality, just spending time with your bae should be all the matters, right? I mean, Valentine’s Day is on a Tuesday this year, so it’s not like you can do much. Just being with your SO should be enough! But, since we love drama, I will show you all of the most ridiculous things that TV shows teach us about Valentine’s Day, and why none of them will actually happen to you this year, whether you’re single or have a bae.
Your Bae Will Plan A Valentine's Day Scavenger HuntAs much as I love Ben and Leslie on Parks and Recreation...their relationship is so extra. Leslie is an over-the-top girlfriend, which makes every other GF look terrible. She sends Ben on an extravagant scavenger hunt for Valentine's Day in season four, episode 14. A scavenger hunt that has 26 clues that takes multiple hours to complete. Fun? Yes. Cute? Totally. Realistic? Not at all. But still entertaining. You can watch Parks and Rec on Netflix.
There Will Be PDA EverywhereYes, there are a lot of couples celebrating Valentine's Day, but not all of them will be making out everywhere. TV shows love to depict V-Day as a day where you can't go anywhere without seeing couples all over each other. In reality, it's not as gross and there isn't that much PDA. But in the season seven episode of The Office, appropriately titled, "PDA," Michael's public displays of affection makes everybody super uncomfortable. So uncomfortable, that they have to have a meeting about it. A little PDA is fine, but people rarely have full-on makeout sessions in public. Leave that stuff at home, okay? You can stream The Office on Netflix.
You Will Get Sex Advice From Your ParentsOkay, maybe you and your bae will have sex on Valentine's Day. Good for you! You might not want to tell your parents about it, like Seth did on The OC after having sex with Summer for the first time. Seth's dad had to give him "the talk" and it was weird and awkward. I mean, he makes good points (to be safe and use protection) but that's not a conversation you want to have on V-Day. You can watch The OC on Hulu.
You Accidentally Give Your Bae The Wrong GiftHopefully this will NEVER happen to you in real life because that's embarrassing and nobody should have to go through it...but it does happen in season three episode of The OC and it's almost too cringey to watch. Seth gives Summer lingerie accidentally, when it was actually supposed to be a gift from his dad to his mom. Oops? Let's hope you don't ever have to imagine your parents in lingerie. You can watch The OC on Hulu.
You Will Have Your First Kiss...And He Will Turn Into A FrogObviously you won't turn your BF into a frog, but this episode of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch is really cute and funny so I had to remind you all that it exists. I mean, we all had that fear that we were going to have our first kiss and it would be really bad, right? Well, that actually happened to Sabrina on Valentine's Day, and it was enough to make me never want to kiss somebody on V-Day. You can watch Sabrina, The Teenage Witch on Hulu.
You'll Spend A Romantic Weekend Away With Your BF...And Your MomI know that Lorelai and Rory are really close...but spending Valentine's Weekend away with your mom, your boyfriend, and your mom's boyfriend is just a little weird. Especially since they get into a weird fight while they are there. Valentine's day should be for you and your bae. Or even you and your mom(Galentine's Day, duh) but never the two. It just gets awkward. You can watch Gilmore Girls on Netflix.
You'll Get Sent Anonymous FlowersPoor Liz Lemon from 30 Rock never had any luck with dating...and it gets even worse on Valentine's Day. In season one, Liz gets sent an anonymous order of flowers, and spends her entire Valentine's Day trying to figure out who sent it to her. As it turns out, it was sent to her by accident. He did let her keep the flowers, though. You can watch 30 Rock on Netflix.
